A) We don't have modern cars, our roads aren't as good, we suck at driving, blah blah blah B) Our Road Transport Agency is archaic and needs to change OR C) *Que john_f comment here*

Why the need for a dig at me, its also johnf_456. Speed is not everything.
We for starters we don't have the population base to fund better roads. Our idea of road improvement is adding a few extra passing lanes, or patching up a few pot holes.

Well many here cant quote or even use correct names. Advanced roading and cars require money which poor nz does not have. Not to mention drivers even in australia do not have big speed limits either only 110. Compare apples with apples, nz will never be like germany.

Of course they can; they choose not to for entertainment purposes.

The earthquake down here in chch was a terrible thing but the thing about chch roads is that they were a deadset disgrace before the earthquake. Potholes and poor sealing everywhere it was an utter disgrace where did all my tax dollars go lol! In Gerry Brownlee's stomach!

I like the big one in the middle without a speed limit marker.Ja.

All our tax dollars are either paid out in Treaty settlements or embezzled (STOLEN) by those filthy tax cheats westpac.
That is WHY we never have any money to spend on improving our roads. Or anything else, for that matter.

Yeah and i'll bet our tax dollars are also flowing out of this country with the foreign bank's profits. Smile and wave John, smile and wave

i think 120kph is a good speed

Yes, I agree. Many modern cars are actually MORE fuel efficient at this speed than at 100km/h.

Nz has never l built decent roads . At least the poms do, dont see them out patching the M1 every week . Here just scrape surface, 1 layer of broken rock thengravel mix thenchip seal .Too mean to putpropermacadamdownsaying it is our conditions that needchip sealbut thats BSEnglands cliamateharderthan ours .

Guess our politicians just never thought roading was a high priority! Some of the roads down here are worse then 3rd world country roads full of bumps and holes and terrible sealing

Instaed of posting and goin' 'blah blah NZ limits are too low blah blah blah' check limits 'round the world not just Europe.
You guys comparing European motorways to NZ roads, have you actually driven them! I've driven quite a few and it would be fair to say that the vast majority are no better, and in a lot of cases worse, than NZ motorways. Yet the speed limits are still significantly higher, and road toll per capita lower.
I'm not suggesting this is the only basis for an increase in speed limit here, because it's not.

I think we're lower than the middle. Most countries range between 110 - 130 kph.I notice one interesting idea that could be introduced here - a slower limit when it is raining. Some countries have a limit of 130kph but 110 kph when raining.I think NZ could do something like 110 when fine, 95 when wet, given our road quality - or lack of.

Serious question - have you driven in Europe!
130kmh roads have full dividers, a minimum of uncontrolled entries and exits and drop to 110 in rain anyway

More like the taxpayer or road-user in this country isn't keen on stumping up the necessary to have the roading network (or health system / welfare / whatever) that they think they're entitled to.But I don't think we are unique there.
vtecintegra,

Maybe their motorways aren't any better than ours (I actually tend to think they are most of the time) but they're certainly better than our State highways for most of their length
If SH1 was in France (for instance) it would certainly have a 90kmh limit in most places

Also interesting to see that some of the countries with the higher / no limit also have the lowest tolerance for enforcement.ie Germany and Switzerland with 0 tolerance.

I agree with you on that, and don't think our single lane roads should have higher speed limits than they currently do.
Most of the motorways I've driven on in Germany, France, Austria, UK are no better than ours, often in poorer state due to the volume of traffic they get. Italian autostrada are terrible, a very good example of why privatisation of roading isn't a good idea.

Yup, I've also driven in Canada, the USA and Australia. Glad I got everyone talking, some interesting views :D

Sorry John, you've just become so predicatable! I'm sure you're a nice guy in real life, just had to take a dig at ya.
