I think a 4km limit on holidays would really help with congestion. Most people wouldn't bother just going 4km.

moosie_21, Jun 4, 10:17am
"The lowered tolerance does have the unexpected benefit of making drivers concentrate and focus on their driving and their speed. This has spin-off benefits in making their driving safer."

There you have it, from the horses mouth. The cops PRIMARY care is not your driving!

Hahahahaa,

rod525, Jun 4, 10:19am
Going just 4km is not really a holiday, in fact we wouldn't even be out of our road.

nickolaz, Jun 4, 10:23am
I thought I read they were putting at 6k over!

Personally I can't see it making much difference, people will barely reduce their speed, if they reduce it at all. All I can see it doing is causing further impatience amongst those drivers that normally speed and overtake everything in sight.

kingfisher21, Jun 4, 10:30am
4kmh, what a joke, thats only allowing for a 4% speedo difference, the difference between new and say 3/4 worn tyres is more than that, if i got a ticket for 4kmh over I'd be telling them where to shove it.

Whenever there is a holiday and it's nice weather they all puff up their chests and say what a good job they have done keeping the toll down, light drizzles on dry roads turning them slick or heavy rain and it's the same or worse than usual. Can put a finger on it almost every time.

To a point I don't blame them for being harsh cause it's hard to control thousands of dickheads on the road. However they use it to profit and don't push the message that NZers can't drive to save themselves enough. It targets the wrong people and needs to be flamed to death for being so utterly stupid. If they spent half what they did on stupid ads and crap as they did on a highschool practical education or mandatory course of some kind we'd be a lot better off.

girlracer2005, Jun 4, 11:24am
yes speed has some part of the road toll but look at it those people are not looking at the speed limt and are going well over its got to do with the driver and driving to the roads not so much the speed and id hate to be following a preson doing 90 km and try to pass in safe place at 94 or even better a person doing 90 in a single lane come to passing lane they speed up ! how do you then pass them ! use the hole passing lane and hold up just as much traffic ! so no one wins

net_oz, Jun 4, 11:26am
Think i've got you sussed mate.
No respect for anyone on the road a!

bmwnz, Jun 4, 11:28am
I have no evidence to support this, but it is likely that many people here, being car enthusiasts of sorts, have belonged to a car club and undertaken advanced driver training. Couple that with track time with the aforementioned clubs and its possible that many of us are somewhat better prepared than the average driver to deal with the unexpected on the roads. No matter - we're all tarred with the same brush and must therefore all be treated as n00bs by the authorities. Such is life in a nanny state.

Yes I would like to see the statistics that show the people doing 100-104km being over-represented in accident statistics. Its the clowns that overtake on blind corners (theres plenty of them, blind corners and clowns!) that get me.If the Police gave a toss they might have a car just after a section of hill road and better promote the *555 number. And how about targeting the vehicles holding traffic up caravans, boats etc!

just to be the opposite im going to agree with the 4kph tolerance based on my personal experiences.

now im definitely no granny driver (can prob tell by my username) and im not a boy racer either.

usually when i go away on a long trip i want to get there as fast as possible whilst still keeping to the speed limit (ok going over sometimes to overtake)

the last public holiday i went away on they had a 4kph tolerance as well.
i was mentally prepared for it and just sat on 90-100 most the way. the trip did take a bit longer than usual but it was nice and cruisy.
however if on this trip there was the normal 10kph tolerance i probably have been driving a lot faster trying to overtake everyone and would probably just end up fustrated from all the slow drivers.

so in that case it worked well as i knew it was going to be busy and wasnt going to bother rushing. i think if people want to get to their destination earlier then leave earlier or even the day before, plan in advance and get the day off work while there wont be as many people on the road.

so the 4kph tolerance gives you a chance to mentaly prepare for a slower trip.
the 10kph tolerance didnt seem to be working hence why they are trying something new, and so far from what they are saying its working well.

yes slow drivers are annoying but like i said before, if you want to get there earlier, then leave earlier and be prepared for the slow drivers.

only thing i dont agree with with this 4kph limit is if they were to sit at the end of a passing lane clocking people. that would fustrate drivers more and make them unsafer on the roads. so hopefully they dont do that.

When will people wake up and demand some proper policing. I can't believe this country is so stupid that we blindly accept "sounds good" ideas with no scientific grounding that really just fund the empty facade we call the Police.

* Police Radar is only accurate to 3km/h at 100km/h.

* Where is the study to show that watching a speedometer more closely is nota bigger risk than that posed by a sensible tolerance.

* A tolerance this low actually means you even risk a ticket by setting your cruise control speed to 90km/h in many modern vehicles even assuming the speedometer is 100% accurate.

* How many intentionally speeding drivers go past un-ticketed while an Officer is busy writing out a ticket for someone who accidentally did 102 km/h.

The Police are just exploiting poor science and using blatant propaganda tactics. They have successfully confused people into believing that unrealistic tolerances will actually increase the amount of intentionally speeding drivers being caught. If you actually think about it logic would tell you the opposite will be true.

I can't believe we live in a country of such sheep.

I think you just think you're smarter than you really are. Most lemmings are like that.

flybye_in_a_rx7, Jun 4, 12:35pm
jazz. i thought cars displayed slower then your actual speed. my car does anyway, i assumed most other cars would do the same. so if you set your cruise to 90kph wouldnt you be going 80-85kph!

crzyhrse, Jun 4, 12:39pm
Me for one. I've found that when they're busy dealing with 'customers' that have barely done anything illegal, they're not sitting waiting for me.

cjdnzl, Jun 4, 12:40pm
Got you sussed as well, mate.Plonkers who 'edit' others posts are despicable smartarses.Wear the label.

crzyhrse, Jun 4, 12:41pm
No. Speedometers almost always read a little high from the factory. So if the needle is on 100km/h you're probably only doing 96km/h.

crzyhrse, Jun 4, 12:41pm
He's proud of the label. It's the first thing he's ever earned.

bmwnz, Jun 4, 12:44pm
Consumer NZ reckons 10% error is about normal:

cjdnzl, Jun 4, 12:52pm
Their 'stats' are all to hell anyway.Basing results on one particular weekend regardless of weather and/or fuel prices is completely meaningless, and citing those figures demonstrates their complete ineptitude with statistics.I almost wish for a bad weekend on the roads - not that I wish any harm to people - just so the ridiculous 4kmh limit can be seen as pointless, and even counter-productive.

flybye_in_a_rx7, Jun 4, 1:00pm
o yeah sorry thats what i meant. jazz just said if you were to set cruise to 90kph then you could risk getting a ticket. which didnt make sense

jrlaw, Jun 4, 1:56pm
Why not just drive to the conditions, watch the speed limits, does it really matter if you are 5 minutes longer getting to where you are going.Best to be cool and feeling good when you arrive. Have A GREAT WEEKEND ALL will be home all this holiday.
