How much time does the new Taupo bypass save?

Bicycles do not slow motorist down as much other motorists.
There is less chance to overtake a truck or a slow motorhome which may hold you back for kilometres.
Unless you get once a year event like Great Lake Challence around Lake Taupo.

Only thing we miss about the bypass is not stopping at the toilets by the marina for a pee

++, and giving the dog one as well.

I like stopping in Taupo, so still go that way if I think it will be quiet through the main street.

In the summertime the town is just one giant traffic jam, even then it might only save you 10 or 15 minutes using the bypass but the benefit for your mental health is enormous!

I guess it might depend on the time of day.I will probably be coming through early Thursday evening around 7pm on my way to Auckland from Palmerston North, and back on Sunday around 4-5pm.

Shurly cant save more than 5mins!
Poor taupo economy I say lol and BP Wieraki thats gona die! and a good oportunity for someone to open a similar thing on the bypass road

rob_man, Oct 13, 6:43pm
Wairakei.

1ollie, Oct 13, 6:45pm
Yawn.

rob_man, Oct 13, 6:52pm
Surely.

franc123, Oct 13, 7:02pm
LOL, if you are doing PN to Auckland and you want to save time you don't go to Taupo full stop. You go Waiouru/Nat Park/Otorohanga/Pirongia etc and come out at Ngaruawahia, and go from there.I' sure there will be others that have their own variations on this, Taupo is the long way!

rob_man, Oct 13, 7:06pm
I use the western access through Mangakino and come out at Turangi, saves heaps of time.

twink19, Oct 13, 8:15pm
would save more than 5 min. road comes out by the air port other side of Taupo. would say over 10 min depending on time of day, or weekend when sport event on.just hope the local busines dosnt suffer

2get1, Oct 13, 8:18pm
long weekends, public holidays and over summer weekends etc it takes more than 10 minutes to get from the Mobil servo southof town, to the edge of town by KFC, let alone through town and out the other side with the banked up traffic trying to get around the aracia bay area or whatever its called. could save you as much as 30 minutes maybe more on a weekend or in summer peak etc

proracer, Oct 13, 8:46pm
Tokoroa and Turangi will be winners of the Taupo bypass

proracer, Oct 13, 8:48pm
How many people from Auckland use SH27 to SH1 at Tirau!

rob_man, Oct 14, 2:40pm
Depends on where I'm going, Rotorua would be the only destination for that route.

phillip.weston, Oct 14, 3:32pm
I don't think it's mostly about saving time it's more getting the heavy trucks and holiday through-traffic out of the main streets of Taupo.

sandypheet, Oct 14, 7:30pm
Worked at the garage at Atiamuri a few years back and it was surprising the amount of trade that came in from people who had stayed in Taupo the night and forgot to fill up.

gbbrot, Oct 14, 7:53pm
Long overdue. Should have been done when they built the Desert Road.

big.b-lil.c, Oct 15, 11:58am

big.b-lil.c, Oct 15, 11:59am

neville48, Oct 16, 7:17pm
will be a magic bypass in the chrissy-hols, thats a drag through Taupo,I'm sure the taupo people will say the same and maybe some of the dive takeaways on the main street will cop a paint job to pull the punters that are left, geez they need it.

electro2000, Oct 16, 7:48pm
