Two turnoffs from new road are quite close to the race track.

Well My wife and I did it last night, went straight through taupo then after going to turangi and on the way back it saved us 14mins travelling time in total. So a resonable amount of time and wairakei was dead lol

what time of the nite ! cause if you saved 14 mins when there was ni traffic about anyway it has to be as previously mentioned 1/2 an hour plus with normal traffic and even more of a time saving on long weekend or peak holiday traffic. Like trying to get through there on new years eve arfo or new years day around lunchtime when everyone is looking for parks in town etc.
I never stop in taupo but that long line of traffic crawling through town is a pain in the arse, will gladly bypass that.
now they just need to do the same for southbound traffic in otaki thats shocking.

Shit I didn't realise they had opened it already, that was rather quick. Good bye BP Waireki. As for Otaki they could by pass the whole lot from Levin south.

Hand up. Best way to get south from Auckland. Across the plains and miss all the SH1 drag.

Fair comment but increasingly used by large trucks - and no passing lanes.
I used to use the Western By-pass frequently but it's so boring.

Levin is the pits to go through.Traffic lights and parking-focusedlocal drivers.
Have used the Shannon route north when traffic is heavy and rejoin SH One near the Rangitira (sp!) golf course.
Personally find Otaki only a minor nuisance cf Levin.

Try getting into the wgtn/kapiti area on a Sunday arvo or the last day of a long weekend. Levin to pram is pretty much at standstill. It is my least favourite part of the trip down the north island whether the traffic is flowing or not.

It would have saved us more than 14 mins.it probably took us that to drive the new road, love it.business's in taupo probably will suffer but we only brought food there once and never again. So by pass is cool by me.plenty of other places to stop at, further down the line.mrs fordee

so how long before a big tucker-stop goes in on the north-end roundabout or at the lakeside turnoff, like the Bombay one, tons of room there to do it.

Elect70. if coming from south go thru roundabout at airport, thru next roundabout (Napier/Tpo Rd) and take next exit onto Broadlands Rd and straight to track, from North take first exit after Warakei roundabout straight up Centennial Drive to track, As I understand it BP Wairakei is closing and relocating to a new site on the bypass with a complex as per Bombay etc

^^ hope their shit service improves at new location . I thought BP might open 1, otherwise Shell at Turangi might have picked up more custom . Bombay 1 insnt too badTiahape is the best i have been to .

Yep, that's the fastest way to get from Ak to wgtn
chookz1,
Nov 1, 8:09am
Oh yeah, and it takes 9 mins on the new bypass at 100kph, and around 20 - 40 mins the old way depending on whether they have the usual collection of try-hards on bicycles or not.

Isn't it just! That whole section of SH1 is one of the most nightmarish sections of road anywhere in NZ, weekends if anything are worse than weekdays. If someone has a crash anywhere south of Levin, particularly in that Waikanae/Pram/Paekak/Pukerua bay section you can forget trying to get anywhere quickly.
therafter1,

Its a nightmare at the best of times isn't it. I avoid it like the plague unless I have absolutely no option, and then I try to make sure that I go thru well before or after any busy periods. And it doesn't have to be very busy to be problematic.
It probably wouldn't be so bad if there was something to look at while you are constantly held up, but there isn't as it is a featureless ugly section of highway with visual man made pollution in every direction other than the short segment between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay.
Why anyone wants to live down there is beyond me !
therafter1,

I love the fact that you can now bypass Taupo, but by crikey I get the impression that someone was instructed to go out and build a piece of highway and do your best to make it as ugly as you can ! . so far I think they have succeeded.
By the way, the local cops seem to have fallen in love with it as well and it looks like it is a new playground for them !

rotorua go through back of matamata and out half way up the hill there go thru a real little tin pot village (hahaha sorry residents)

Yep all the city folk leave our beaches around 2 pm on weekends to "beat the traffic "thats why they are all bleating about building transmission gully . Couldalways turn around & go over pahiatua track to welly .
