I Learnt A Baffling Thing Regarding Fines Today.

So its turned out I am taking on my work experience guy full time, was on a WINZ funded Mechanics programme to nowhere so decided its time he had a real job: Well, Ok so found out today he has a few fines totalling around $6000 ran with a bad crowd for a bit etc
WINZ (mine & your taxes) have been paying for his lifestyle - I can live with that, and his fines @ $40 per week which is a little odd given its in one Govt dept to another!
What really concerned me today was the lottery style winning he had with WINZ at finding out they will now chock off $3000 worth of his fines (in one hand into the other!) but only 'gift' him $1500 to buy some tools, to my mind he needs about $2500 worth to be any kind of apprentice but hey

I sat there baffled as the WINZ lady told me all of this, as would anyone that has actually worked most of their bipedal life

So next time your voting - vote for the lemur or the leopard instead - to me they would have a far better understanding of taxpayer funded spending

Yip it all sucks, but on the other hand, He gets a bit of a fresh start cos of you, and you get the chance to shape him into a good mechanic as well as help him grow up. That part of its pretty cool i reckon.

i'd vote for julian, king of the lemurs in a jiffy. he likes to move it move it.

berg, May 27, 5:37pm
Shocking aye. I know of idiots who have had $40 grand plus written off all after the taxpayer has paid $5 grand plus in fines for them by way of the dole.
At least your guy looks like he might be heading down the right track now. Must be your good influence zeph

bigracket, May 27, 5:38pm
My apprenticeship was about 30% learning the trade 70% learning to shout my mouth around tradesman and listen. LOL

im_andrew, May 27, 5:43pm
While It seems pretty horrible
"The govt. are paying this guys fines with MY money!" its more like one govt department donating $5k of their imaginary budget to another govt department. So nobody is actually out of pocket. Its an imaginary debit being paid with imaginary money.

zephyrheaven, May 27, 5:44pm
Growing up ha, I like that term - I aged about 20 years dealing with all the earthquake stuff / leases / insurance etc - it was weird at times it felt like I was standing next to myself going "dude, what the freak are we gonna do!!" while calm me was signing stuff & getting his business going again
I tell ya, I dealt with thing waaaaaay over my 34 years of experience I dont know who to thank for that - my old man is pretty good at sorting things out but I had to do it alone this time, he was busy as keeping mums jitters at bay ha ha

crzyhrse, May 27, 5:45pm
Was that before or after he met you!

elvis58, May 27, 5:45pm
The whole system is a cash cow, these kids get pinged at every turn to only in the end face up to court where they get a job that pays them off at unrealistic amount.

crzyhrse, May 27, 5:46pm
We're still out of pocket for the costs of prosecution.

antwerp87, May 27, 5:47pm
Yet I have had to pay every parking ticket and had to pay for my tools etc too. But hey atleast the good thing about that was after 8 years I was able to pick up my gorgeous set of Snap On:D :D :D

zephyrheaven, May 27, 5:49pm
Yes but therein lies my baffle - by wiping / giving his fines away - what has he learned!

When I was flatting one of the lads fell asleep listening to a call girl from Guatemala or somewhere at about $20 a minute , of course we all moved out at the end of the year - the phone bill was forgotten - who didnt forget! Telecom - right when my wife & I were nervously waiting for our mortgage to be approved!!So I had to sell a few toys & pay for Dans bad call all those years ago $1600 because it had been 4 or 5 years

The point! If you do something stupid - and everyone is sooooo anti these kids now - dont fret, its monopoly money anyway!!

zephyrheaven, May 27, 5:50pm
Ha ha, you know the answer to that my assless chap wearing V rod rider!

im_andrew, May 27, 5:50pm
Yeah but thats what us employed people are for. The money we have to pay in fines (when winz doesnt take care of them for us) pays for the prosecution of people who cant pay their fines and eventually get them wiped.

zephyrheaven, May 27, 5:51pm
I started with Snap On - broke my piggy bank every week & left me poor but Ive never regretted it

bigracket, May 27, 5:52pm
Year zeph, Your in a good position to lead this guy down the right track though, (I am assuming he is young) Thats the good news, you get to see him grow as a mechanic and a young adult, its all about modelling imho.

zephyrheaven, May 27, 5:53pm
True bigracket - true, he has come a long way from the grumpy wee knowall at the start - boy I gave him some horrible jobs at the start

johnf_456, May 27, 5:53pm
Yup, good on ya zephyrheaven.

zephyrheaven, May 27, 6:00pm
I do I do, man thats weird Tony (the new rep) was in tonight (ps - never have a beer with a snap on rep while your working - its all, oh I'll run to the truck & grab you one of these new XXX & hey try one of these while your doing that it'll make it easier) was saying about the rings & how many millions you have to sell to get oneha ha weird

antwerp87, May 27, 6:08pm
Yea same here. Took me a good while to pay it off. My first item I got off them was a snap on Ratchet screw driver. And I use it every day. And they replace the tips whenever they snap. :D

snoopy221, May 27, 6:31pm
YEAH.
Thought it mighta been one of those-either i'd be p**n on ya grave or ya'd be a survivor.

zephyrheaven, May 27, 6:48pm
DOH yeah, true I can imagine there is another way they can get me *sigh* thankfully this Zephyr ute build is getting under way - those promotional vehicles sure do gobble up a lot of money/tax et al

smac, May 27, 7:08pm
I thought WINZ funded fines payment was a loan! You sure he doesn't have to pay it back!

zephyrheaven, May 27, 7:12pm
Well, thats what I instantly thought (I mean, nothings free right!) but nay - even the tool grant is ka-ching = free stuff for being on the dole!

Weird

Reward failure! I think that is generally the mentality of people that dont go far ie: people making up this crazy stuff

pge, May 27, 8:37pm
Well done, zeph, giving the lad a chance at the straight 'n' narrow.

Let's hope he apppreciates your input. and the fact that you are putting YOUR ass on the line for him.
