A little OT but Powerbuilt have a good starter kit for Apprentices thats only $1580 (Our latest Apprentice just got it last week) Comes with two tool boxes + roll cab and pretty much all your basic tools, only things really needed on top of it is impact gun and any special tools required for what you're working on.

Went Blue Point in the end, pretty good deal I reckon for whats in the kit & lets face it, on the job I like tools that feel good in your hand

Yeah, because the dole is some kind of hand me down right of passage! Im paying his fines for him ,like a fair few of my tax paying friends are as well - this system of no recourse no action is babysitting a ticking timebomb
zephyrheaven,

I was also surprised - but the term the morons at WINZ use is 'transition to work' this is a gift from my taxes to any pillock willing to get a few quotes & buy some gear to get into a job
Make no mistake - we as a country are failing our young people & in return they are being rewarded like this!
zephyrheaven,

Then you are the problem andy - there is a utopia out there but hard work & toil are foul language to those that populate the world you are from
I was charged out @$65+ an hour on $9 because while I knew it sucked I was learning from masters of my trade, I could happily charge 10 hours a day making my boss at the time an easy retirement - I know people expect the ten million they have on GTA4 means they own the town they live in these days, but heating up pies at the local Z mart might change your mind in a few decades when chazza has your 6th child
zephyrheaven,

You were quick on the draw with his downfall of losing $40 a week to fines, to me thats a massive cop out - nowhere in my world was any kind of govt dept paying for my mistakes
Giving people free tool kits & paying off 50% of their fines for winning the lotto - sorry finding employment [-isnt going toput New Zealand on any kind of world summit anytime soon
I do not suffer people that apologise for a system that rewards constant failure

You both have really good points, At the end of the day, one more person is working, that's good aye! I assume its been your choice to take the "boy" on aye zeph.
zephyrheaven,
May 28, 7:51pm
Yes my choice, he has a newborn son & plenty of reasons to go back to the lifestyle he had before - I remember being in his shoes & realising sadly nobody but myself could take on the task of being a machine in this cog we call life - OK lots of people including some of my own friends have made a good living from living off the fat of others, but that wasnt for me - so shoot me
I cant give a moments thought to people willing to say $40 to pay off fines is a hardship - yes the fines are stupid & make no sense at all, but if you werent in the wrong you wouldnt be in the gun

" I remember being in his shoes & realising sadly nobody but myself could take on the task of being a machine in this cog we call life"Yip and that's indirectly what you re going to be teaching him as you work along side him. Thats what a tradesman is - someone that can fix there own f ups.
bigracket,

But it took me 8000 hours to learn that, prob from someone like you.

I just think we stuff up so bad in this country when we abolished the old set up. Tradesman just not been the same aye!
zephyrheaven,

I dont preach to him at all he can do what he wants, his personal life is his own Ive only become involved in this fines trash because of WINZ - as long as he is reliable (& out of about 12 candidates he has been the only one thus far) & does his job he is OK with me Im a fairly young business owner in the trade & from what Ive heard from older guys my man is the only one willing to show up on time - its a nice place to work with nothing too serious to worry about, I can see him in my shoes in a few years if he can hang in there

it's the victim mentalityu that gets me. he's not the victim here.governments don't have any money - they use our money to do whatever they like. there wouldn't be too many apprentices that get their tools paid for by their employer - it's a huge investment that they need to be able to appreciate the value of in my opinion.most people don't appreciate things that are given to them half as much as something they've had to earn themselves, and there will be plenty who know how to rort this one i bet.short answer is - he did the crime, we pay the bills! and the kickstart, and the tools and where does it end!i'd rather everyone pay $5pw less tax (or whatever this scheme costs) and not fund that sort of carry on.

humourously speaking and all puns intended cause i'm bored-stiff ., you might have been err "baffled" at what you heard form w.i.n.z but after it's all said and done, don't let yorself get too "exhausted" over the hole subject as the worst thing that could happen is it "backfire's" on you and the guy only starts at your place and then drives onto a biiger job down-the-track lol

Is the old zephyr still going! Just be happy in your work ol' timer and teach someone the tricks of your trade, they may just take it on and be in your shoes one day

Far Canal I can'T beleive any one would fork out 2K for something as crass as that it would have to like $100 worth of gold in it max! Oh thats right it's target market is the muppets that buy snapon Ha Ha !
bigracket,

Man, whats better, he turns up for the first day of his apprenticeship with a $2 shop screw driver set and then hes no bloody use to you at all, at least winz have given him and you a good start. When I started my apprenticeship my boss had to buy all my tools for me out of his own pocket, and he took a tool allowance of $5 a week out of my wage till it was paid back. still i guess he could claim for it that way I guess. Anyhow I hope it works out for you zeph cos if you look at it the tools give him a chance to make you money aye ! after you take the f ups out of the equation that is Ha ha ha.

Here's the thing - imagine if a social worker with zero experience, other than driving, advised you that the way you were fixing a vehicle was wrong, and that his way was waaay better. After you'd finished laughing, you'd tell him to piss off and get back to polishing a seat with his butt.
Yet there's a number of people in here with zip experience in social rehabilitation and welfare, corrective justice and training, not to mention the economics of it all.all quite prepared to state with their hands on their hearts that they know better than the people studying this for decades, and working in the thick of it every day. Arrogant hypocrites, everyone of 'em. Get a grip, and stick to what you know. Your ignorance is hanging out for all to show on this one, let it go.

Gee thanks, well it started out as disbelief at just WINZ but now its plain to see why we are where we are in this economy thanks for enlightening me further on the subject of social welfare & training PS he didnt need the $1500 gift its a bonus yes but, most tool companies do very good deals for apprentices at $40 per week with no interest (dont earn it / dont miss it mentality etc)\ He will be buying more straight away as it is
You say ignorance smac & fair enough - I wouldnt like to know anything else about the system
He will be fine with me & I look forward to him becoming a productive staff member - I enjoyed the one on one I had when I started, always felt a bit sorry for guys in dealerships
Cheers, thanks for the wakeup

Hey what I'm saying about people's general knocking of 'the system' has nothing to do what you've done. You've given a guy another chance that he may not otherwise get, and I think that's fantastic. I just get annoyed at people taking what I see as easy swipes at the bit they see (an ex crim getting a hand out instead of paying his dues) without thinking that perhaps, just perhaps, there's a little more to it.
People seem to view welfare in these situations as a free ride. That's not the goal, the goal is to get the guy into position where he's a productive member of our society, rather than reoffending.
Here's a thing - ask your new employee: all other things being equal, is he more likely, or less likely to re-offend having had some help with his fines and tools!

I think the point I was initially making has been taken wrong reading back, my initial surprise was that one Govt dept gifts the money to another (winz paying courts) - the transaction is useless in my opinion - why does it even exist!
Who wins! The courts / the police / winz! Ive got no idea anymore - we borrow some incredible amounts of money each week to keep the country afloat (well into the millions from foreign lenders) - as far as I can see, if this is a small drop in the winz / courts transaction lists - we really need to start asking some questions here, how many millions exchange between these departments every day that are simply monopoly money - it never existed - it wasnt even made but its changing hands all the time! Im worried about it.
