Publicity is starting to happen so goodbye anonymity. Having the support person to walk behind me on that tricky part of the road was great.

I crossed Rakaia Bridge on my trike last Thursday morning. I had my support driver behind me driving my van with hazard lights on. The crossing went safely without incidents and I heard no toots or any other comments once the drivers passed me on the other side of the bridge. Thanks for your patience motorists. It has been pretty good on the roads this far but a few places I had ridden on to the grass as I saw a truck coming behind me and other vehicles on the oncoming lane.

Nice work chap, I feel tired just thinking about all that pedalling!
Drivers are a lot more aggro in the North Island, so make the most of those South Island highways while you can!

on your journey, once you get to the nth isl, which route are you taking sh1 up through the centre, or mt messenger taranaki then across to te kuiti!, or heading east first and west back down ( cos once you've got to the top you have to do the return run lol)

I have not decided yet which route to take on N I! I need to check maps and topographics. After conquering the highest sealed road in NZ nothing should be a problem but uphills slow me down a lot. Once I got to the top I might do the same in Australia, Adelaide to Darwin, eh! Have taken a lot of photos and videos but the videos need plenty of editing. I thought about using a Blokart on Ninety Mile Beach perhaps if I can find one to borrow!

Couple days ago I was just riding my trike today on a bit hilly and narrow State Highway 1 section between Kaikoura and Blenheim in the middle of nowhere. I was riding up the hill and I noticed a guy rubbernecking from a window of a rental car and taking a photo or video of me with his camera or a cellphone. He was on the opposite side of the road going south and I was going north. I get that all the time so I first ignored him but he came back, passed me and was pointing the camera at me! He stopped on top of the hill and pointed the camera on me. I tried to catch up with him and talk to him but he sped away. I got his rego number and tried to take a photo of him unsuccesfully. Then he came back and drove on my side of the road pointing the camera at me. I looked in horror as he kept driving on the wrong side of the road while pointing the camera at me! He almost hit oncoming car but just managed to swerve and go to the left side of the road I made sure that I remembered the number plate and I called *555 when I got to my van just a few hundred meters away. Police got other reports from him as well. So obviously the other car which he almost collided with must have reported him! If anyone wants to take a pic or video of me just stop in safe place and I can organise it when it is safe.
edited for clarify.

Yes that foreign car driver was a fool and he should be due to return the car back to Apex on Wednesday. The rental car company would not like his antics.
You are now in the area afflicted/dominated by North Islanders off the ferries, beware!
Many's the time I've stopped to give way at the old Seddon one-way bridge, only to have the car behind me pull out and overtake, blow their horn at me, then race off down the one-way bridge only to meet a truck coming the other way.
In the North island you will encounter major climbs no matter which way you head north. The only way to completely avoid the central high country is to go via New Plymouth. However you will still need to climb Mt Messenger, it's not as high as the alternative roads but there's a narrow bit with a tunnel at the top.
Congratulations on your progress so far!

New Seddon Bridge tomorrow. I climbed Lions Back Hill using partly not yet opened road so I avoided some trucks meeting me on the narrow temporary overbridge. I have climbed highest sealed road in NZ, Crown Range Road so hills are not too much a problem. They do slow me down quite a bit so that is the reason to avoid them. SH1 is wider and straighter than some other roads so I am still wondering which route to take! Plenty of time to think as I have not crossed the ditch yet. All good this far :)

it says "Getting 'city' motorists out of their cars and on to bikes for short trips would save 100 lives in New Zealand a year, a new study says."
you fail. find a article that says pedaling the highway saves lives

I Finnished the South Island leg of my tour today. Plenty of cyclists on the road today. In fact more than cars this morning as I saw the numbers around 6000 on someones back! There was the annual Grape Ride today and I waited before those bunches of cyclists were gone. I am not a bunch rider so I prefer solitude rather than being part of a flock. Getting to Picton I got a great response from the public on the bars and my fundraising to Spinal Injury Trust got a boost. Cheers, I am happy and have a week break from cycling before going over to North Island.

well gagetman nz is a rural country and a lot of our main roads have long grass along the edges,i dont care what you say but a lot of the time you will not be visible! i guess your flag is tiny like on a mobility scooter! we have a person in our area who rides a similar contraption, i nearly cleaned that person up driving a low slung sports car! please get a flag at least 500cm square or stay off our roads for everyones sake!

Are you brain dead! Read the road code about the speed you should be doing in relation to the distance you can see ahead of you.
rif_raf13,

What an ignorant opinion. SH1 is a boring stretch of road. Cycle touring isnt about taking the shortest route from A to B

You'll do that to the wrong cyclist one day and might not survive the attitude adjustment.I hope they wee on your grave
