Yep a sad incident which could've been avoided in so many ways.sadly those involved didn't have the presence of mind at the time.

jcwholesale, Mar 17, 5:25pm
trogedon what an arse you are, do you think he meant to. It was an accident, a very unfortunate one. Avoidable if the woman was in the cycle lane provided.

nzoomed, Mar 17, 5:40pm
well its hardly the drivers fault is it!
yep ive been down there, i know what its like and would not feel safe cycling there!

nzoomed, Mar 17, 5:44pm
will be very interesting, they all could be partially to blame, not just the car driver, but the truck driver too.
The driver of the truck actually was the one who killed the cyclist, was he too close following!
hopefully it comes out in the trial.

tweetysmum, Mar 17, 6:13pm
Totally agree

trogedon, Mar 17, 6:25pm
You're the FAT arse. It wasn??

dr.doolittle, Mar 17, 7:51pm
What a stupid thing to say.
I'd like to see anyone ride on any footpath at 30-50kmh.

I'll just have to accept that there's no telling some folk.

trouser, Mar 17, 8:24pm
you are all assuming that the door was opened immediatly infront of the cyclist. maybe she did't see it untill too late. cyclists too can have vacant moments.

johnf_456, Mar 17, 8:25pm
drive to the conditions.

trouser, Mar 17, 8:26pm
maybe you should slow down then speedy. what a stupid thing to say.

johnf_456, Mar 17, 8:37pm
^bingo well said, why have cycle lanes if they do not get used. They built them to keep cyclists off the road there, safer than the road so why not use it.

r15, Mar 17, 8:46pm
exactly.

similar to how you dont look out for pedestrians on motorways, or cars in playgrounds

wrong2, Mar 17, 10:14pm
she was a tourist !

if she wasnt a local she probablly wasnt clued onto the cycle lane

cyclists deserve extra care from car owners. they have no protection

bigracket, Mar 17, 10:27pm
Yes fair point but, I got to say I pretty fed up with the attitude of alot of cyclists, they often ride out in the middle of the road at annoying speeds often 2 abreast which astounds me is actually legal! at the end of the day cars are big and the most common vehicle on the road Use your head.

dr.doolittle, Mar 17, 10:41pm
Your posts just get dumber & dumber. You clearly dont understand the wider issue.

I'll make it easy for those who dont know.
Go to the link given, now zoom out. The "section of "footpath" is very wide and smooth -actually smoother than the road" goes from point 'A' as far as the entrance to Orakei Wharf. Approx. 200m or so. Big ride eh.

Obviously kaz you're not really a cyclist so well just leave it at that shall we.

I am a cyclist to and would not ever ride 2 abreast or on Tamiki Drive (the road). So why is it that the truck driver wasn't charged also! An accident happened and he didn't provide sufficient stopping distance to aviod the cyclist! If the cyclist was a car, the truck driver would be found guilty for rear ending them. It doesn't matter if you are driving a car, scooter or a 10 tonne truck, if you are following too closely or too fast you are at fault. Also passing traffic on the left is illegal and would have been on that corner with the double yellow lines in the middle. so why did the cyclist end up under the truck!

Truckies should pay attention not only to the load they are carrying but also safe stopping distance. I appreciate ther are some idiots who cut trucks off by swerving in front of them but in this accident the cyclist should of been treated as a car and the correct distace between the truck and cyclist should of been observed.

Here's an interesting clip for those unfamiliar with the area or incident. Stop at 11 sec & note the road markings.

resolutionx, Mar 17, 11:04pm
Ok no double yellow lines where there should be but still truckie didn't stop in time.

dr.doolittle, Mar 17, 11:19pm
PS. From memory the refered to section of footpath was actually created to house Kelly Taltons & not specifically for cyclists as some would have you believe.

Welcome back B69, I didnt know you were gone.

resolutionx, Mar 17, 11:20pm
Not true he was following a vehicle (a cyclist) on the road. He failed to provide a proper stopping distance between his truck and said vehicle, it was not like the cyclist suddernly veered off the foot path in front of the truck -he must of been illegally following too closey or illegally passing a vehicle on the median strip. Plain and simple, if it was a car he hit/rear ended, who slammedon it's brakes (emergency stopped) after hitting the car door (thus stopping at the scene of accident as required by law) the truckie would be at fault also. Legally and insurance wise.

dr.doolittle, Mar 17, 11:23pm
I didnt notice the dates. Has the swelling gone down yet!

resolutionx, Mar 17, 11:29pm
At the end of the day it wasn't the car door that killed the cyclist it was the truck driver, who didn't stop in time, who didn't give the cyclist 1.5m bewteen him and the car. The reason being there is not 1.5m between the parked cars and the road traffic even with the parked car doors closed. He illegally attempted to overtake the cyclist, didn't have enough room or distance to carry out this manuvre and thus should be charged. Plain and simple careless dangerous driving; unfortunately some one has paid with their life.

dr.doolittle, Mar 18, 4:57am
There is a clip on Youtube (by the same guy in my link I think) which shows a cyclist view while riding Tamaki Dr on the footpath/cycle lane.
It's INCREADABLE the amount of pedestrians, runners & prams who just walk in front of him & yes, passenger car doors that get flung open.
I'd rather take my chances on the road. But then I usually only ride there between 5 & 8am.

dr.doolittle, Mar 18, 6:22am
Never seen(other than from a car) or ridden the entire length have you. LOL. Watch the whole clip before you comment.
I've bought & sold a couple of cars, does that make me know-all too!
Why do I feel like I'm flogging a dead horse.

dr.doolittle, Mar 18, 7:57am
A- What bet!
B- I assume you mean St Heliers Bay
C- Your comfortable pace & mine are clearly different.
Answer to your question, There's no point. I ride on the cycle lane provided on the road & leave the footpath for peds, runners & families riding with kids to enjoy.
I also ride all over Auckland, not just around the waterfront. There are no other cycleways that I'm aware of.

You win kaz, you know best.
