Just driven Auckland - New Plymouth - Wellington - Paihiatua - Wellington - Hamilton - Auckland in a 2011 Toyota Corolla with the wife and 2 kids full of bags and managed to get 6.7 l/100km (42 mpg) and I wasn't even trying to save fuel. had to tone down the speed to between 100 and 104 as Mr Plod was on the prowl. But was a nice drive. sigh as much as I hate to say it.

I applaud you - I would have driven into oncoming traffic in about 12Km from home in such a motorcar

Well done

intrade, Feb 10, 1:25am
yea i used on avarage 5.8 liter petrol on european motorways doing 120 kph and overland 80 , 50 60kph with 2011 dacia sandero euro-5 emission only car that comes close to that is the kia picanto that you could buy here if the fuelfiguresmatch manufacturer claims on dacia they do.

wasser61, Feb 10, 1:29am
They have the nice motorways to drive on, last time I was there in 2009 we managed 4.9 in a Peugeot 307 1.6 HDi. but as for NZ and being a petrol 1.8 I am a little stunned with the Toyota.

Isn't Dacia just a rebadged Renault made for Romanian market!

intrade, Feb 10, 1:37am
not quite what it is its powerd by renault and uses the platform of the renault clio a bit like skoda same thing but dacia is low cost no crap added we purchased one with nothing nada no powersteering no electric windo crap just 2 airbags and abs is all its got sells for 6000 euro plenty room and got good torque in low rpm same similar to older small diesel.

vtecintegra, Feb 10, 2:08am
Yeah pretty much a lower quality model on the standard Renault/Nissan small car platform

msigg, Feb 10, 2:41am
Those new corrolla,s drive effortlessly, yes they are cheap to run and I bet serviced they will last a long time. Hard to beat if you want a plain but do everything small car.

Oooooh God, I think I hear a piano headed this way.

magicmat, Feb 10, 3:01am
I get around 10litres per 100km on the open road and a rather eye watering 16 to 20 litres per 100km around town. but then I still find myself making any excuse to go for a drive and dont use my car stereo as I cant hear the engine.

But then again, I don't have any dependants and do have disposable income.

pollymay, Feb 10, 3:16am
I drove a new navara common rail ute from pukekohe to taupo and back with the trailer loaded 3/4 of the way and got 9.7L/100km towing a pigfat celica GT4 over all the hills.

Cost about $80 in fuel round trip I think.

Slayer.hmm I loved it when I was about 12 years old. then I started to like 'music'.

This is probably predictable coming from me but I think that economy is pretty embarrassing for a 2011 car.
Stock standard 2011 Golf petrol driven like that shouldn't exceed 5l/100km on a trip like that. The Blue Motion equivalent you could drop nearly half a litre off that again.

magicmat, Feb 10, 3:38am
Hell, 5l/100km! If that is so it would make a great second car for those milk run type missions.

thejazzpianoma, Feb 10, 3:42am
What are these milk run type missions you speak of!
Clearly I am middle aged and un-hip.

What really blows me away with the New VW's is you can get under 5l/100km on the open road in the big Passat as well.

magicmat, Feb 10, 3:50am
Ha ha. um, going to get a bottle of milk when you run out. sometimes the ol' V8 seems to be a bit of overkill for a half K run to the dairy.

thejazzpianoma, Feb 10, 3:54am
Im with you, thought it might have been a bit more cryptic, its been a long day.

Interestingly, I find the high performance VW's and Audi's often use very little more fuel than the standard models. Driven normally I can get much the same economy out of the older 2.0T Golf as I can from the non-turbo.

The economy goes away once you plant your hoof though and you do need to get in the mindset of just nudging the pedal to take off (which is all you need to do to take off at a normal pace).

zephyrheaven, Feb 10, 3:55am
yeah - those salad days before you found Justin Beiber

zephyrheaven, Feb 10, 3:56am
Didnt you get banned for posting inane useless drivvel!

thejazzpianoma, Feb 10, 3:59am
I think you need a bigger spoon zeph.

vtecnet, Feb 10, 4:05am
My bmw uses 13.8L/100k around town and I don't care :)
I only know because the TV screen tells me.
E39 528i, cost me 4k, 98,000ks, new corolla, 35k. 31k buys me loads of fuel :) and the BMW drives better then the new corolla, has a better 0-100 time, stops quicker etc, more comfortable, not as soul less and wrong. I drove a new Corolla last year in Brisbane for 3 weeks.

akaniva, Feb 10, 4:05am
A 1972 Datsun 1200 would do 42mpg on the open road at 100km/hr - there hasn't been much progress in fuel economy, naturally there has been in safety etc.

thejazzpianoma, Feb 10, 4:10am
Funnily, its the weight and aerodynamic restrictions of the new safety gearthat has held back enhancements in fuel economy. Drop that 1200 Datsun motor in an equivalent modern car and you would see the economy drop off substantially.

That said, most of NZ only look at Japanese cars and the Japanese really seem to have no interest in economy (aside from marketing gimic cars like the Prius which is very thirsty for what it is). As mentioned above VW can get better than 5l/100km out of their big Passat on the open road. you couldn't get anything like that out of big cars of the 70's.
