I've got to say I feel pretty sad for you. You did a top job for next to nothing and the prick complains about 1 small aspect. We've all done it though. I'm really just getting back into my trade so I'm having to relearn heaps so a lot of stuff is taking longer and I'll doing some things cheaper than I should just to get jobs. I have a customer who's a IT guy and he said he would often work extra hours(like 15 - 20) and not be able to charge customers for it.

Can you get it round to his place! Then. will it fit in the shed! Bloody nice job on the truck, take his money and tell him to truck off.

Okay 4g thats a bargain some people are just total full time complainers.
tonyrockyhorror,

No, whole truck was $1k.

Looks like I'm on my own here, but I don't see the problem. The price is irrelevant, attitudedesignz took the job, charged the price he chose to charge, and if there's a fault the customer has a right to ask for it to be fixed. If he said "I'm going to give it to you cheap, but that means there might be faults" that would be another story. Big difference between "asked for it to be fixed" and "complained about it". What exactly has the customer said that's so out of line!
intrade,

for 1000$ i would have painted all over the car and handed the owner a razor blade to scrap the paint off the windows headlight and mirror . and no i would not even have sanded it for that .
intrade,
Apr 23, 9:54am
if he is not happy you get him to specific tell what he wants done in writing and then you give him the quote to do that payment up front 8500$ or he can Fçk off. So yes the price does matter in what you can and cant expect.
attitudedesignz,
Apr 23, 12:32pm
Technically you are correct. I could of DONE a $1000 paint job & then told him to f off when he started complaining about how crappy it looked and i would be well within my rights to take the $ and run, but i did a $4000 job for $1000 & he has the audacity to complain.pffft.ac- tually come to think of it.i might go down with some thinners and 400 grit and say "sorry mate, i got confused, you're the one that wanted the $1000 paint job, i thought you were another customer who wanted a $4000 job. Just give me an hour or so and i'll have it it so it looks like a $1000 job"
I'm sick and tired of going the extra 10 miles with no appreciation.
smac,

But that's kinda what I'm getting at. Why did you do it! (the cheap job). Just so we know what we're talking about here: what would be the cost of the paint (and other consumables), and how many hours did you spend on it all up, including prep!
gunhand,
Apr 23, 4:42pm
I see this kind of thing a fair bit so know what its like. I can tell you if you charged every actuall hour, every scrap of sandpaper, every mill of polish, the wear on machines, every meter of masking tape, every dribble of thinners, every hookit disk and the hundred other things that go into a top quaility paint job as you are entitled the price would be horrendace. As an example I spent 4 hours polishing TWO panels on a car today to make it the same as the rest. Thats about $240 odd worth depending on your charge rate. that wasnt the painting, masking, unmasking and clean up involved for just two panels. Some of the top Aussie cars you see in the likes of Street Machine Mag have had over 100 hours in just buffing alone. Thats $7000 worth just for that at $70 and hour. Ive had people proudly say I spent 10k plus on the motor (which always seem to run like crap) and then want to spend 2k on a complete panel and paint and excpect a show car. And people will also pay 80k for a new car and be happy with the bumpers being a completly different colour. I dont paint that much at home for the very reasons attitude is having with that job. People say one thing and excpect another as well as not want to pay a true cost. And to those who may think its an easy trade, have a go.

gunhand, what you've said about people's expectations, and how people rate panel work (the cost of it) versus motor etc lines up exactly with my experience. It's under-rated, and I sure as hell can't do it.
However, that said, this just all seems a bit odd. For some reason (we don't know what), attitude spent an unknown amount of time on an unknown amount of work, using an unknown amount of products, then charged $1k. This may or may not be a good deal. All depends on the relationship between the two parties (unknown), prior deals (unknown), the clients expectations (unknown), and the claims made by the painter (unknown).
At the end of all that, the client has a gripe with the quality of some of the finish.
I say without further info, fair call. Stand by your work and fix it, or explain the rest of the story.I know one side of one when I see it.
