I want an MX5. Cheap, RWD fun. It will be a weekend toy car.
The trouble is, my partner is dead against it. She thinks its a girls car.

So, Trademe Motoring Fraternity: Your verdict - Girly girls car for posing, or Manly mans car for spirited driving!

foxdonut, May 18, 12:52pm
Which MX5!

bellky, May 18, 12:52pm
Girls car.

But I like the old 1600cc model.

tatts2, May 18, 12:53pm
Ur not a gay hair dresser are you.

tazcsv, May 18, 1:04pm
Make sure you get a soft top one

thejazzpianoma, May 18, 1:07pm
If you are concerned about such things you still have room for a lot of personal growth.

If you like it, buy it, end of story.

tigra, May 18, 1:21pm
Stand up for your self and buy it anyway .LOL!

bloody_piper, May 18, 1:32pm
It has a reputation as a bit of a girls/hairdresser car here in NZ. However having driven one they are stupid amounts of fun to drive, light weight, comfy, pretty fast.
If you want one get one, take it down the the hampton skid pan and have a ton of fun in it.

Had a 1600. Awful suspension and not that peppy really. Had the rag top sliced once. Uses plenty of gas too, but she liked it.

richardmayes, May 18, 2:02pm
It's a hundred less horsepower than a Honda S2000. But it's several thousand dollars less than one of those also. I would own one in a heartbeat if circumstances gave me room in my life for a convertible sports car.

shelleigh, May 18, 2:19pm
Well put Jazz - I certainly wouldn't think a man was less manly because he drove an MX5.
However a Multipla might be a different story.

PS Hope I am not in the bad books for buying a Fiesta instead of a Golf :)

redpheonix9, May 18, 2:31pm
definite emphasis on the weekend toy car, that should never leave your garage with you sitting in the drivers seat, or the passengers seat, for that matter, and if you dont believe me, then here is irrefutable proof of this fact, provided by the world wide web

jerichord, May 18, 2:33pm
they are moderately quick and handle like a gokart, the later 1800 6 speed is a very well set up car, on open road driving with the hood down and a decent c.d. on you will have a huge tightning of the scrotum ,

petal_91, May 18, 2:35pm
People who say one type of car is a girl's car and another type isa man's car are brainless munters. A car is a car. Some cars are preferred by women drivers more than others however.

tazcsv, May 18, 2:41pm
Listen to your missus.

mlh19658, May 18, 2:42pm
Should've added it heldvalue well as wife sold for a very good price.

this one would be better!

When a guy buys an MX-5 colour is important.
Black says "this car is the same colour as the ink in my tattoos."
White is fine as long as it matches your highlights.
Dark Green is known as Brutish Racing Green, so it is ok.
Red is the standard colour for mid-life crisis convertibles.
Blue is fine if it matches your manbag.
Yellow equals banana equals fruit.

There is an easy way to toughen or soften your image in an MX-5, known as K9-Ing. A Rotty will toughen your image, a poodle will not.

This one would probably give a few real-man type cars a run for their money.

Probably more sensible to get a normal one though, especially if you have no chip on your shoulder and nothing to prove. I like dark blue ones myself. 443185001

Yep, no question, girls car

No not at all, but you might be in the bad books for dissing the mighty Multipla!

Seriously though, you did the research, kept an open mind and made an informed decision on what was right for you. Its a bit like this thread really, its your car and you need to buy it for YOU.

The only thing that irks me with car buyers really is the ones that do themselves out of better vehicles because of some silly unfounded nonsense wives tales they have heard. That's not you.

shelleigh, May 18, 4:43pm
Jazz I'm pretty sure you know I was being my usual cheeky self when I "dissed" the Multipla :)
Although I don't mind admitting I wouldn't buy one but not because it's a "dreaded Euro" lol - it's just not a car that appeals to me.

Even though I thought a hatch would be too small for me but zipping around the Gold Coast last month for a week in one helped me realise I was wrong.

thejazzpianoma, May 18, 4:52pm
No, sorry but that's it, its all over. You can take your place among the ranks of knuckle dragging trolls.

shelleigh, May 18, 4:57pm
And I though posters in Parenting were mean.

kaylamarie1, May 18, 4:59pm
