restrictions on who can drive a turbocharged car for a start.and limit the allowed boost to 15 lbs.and seal it and test at WOF time.

sylis04, Jul 2, 4:32pm
what will restricting it achieve! just a waste of time.

steve312, Jul 2, 4:50pm
As stated. There is always going to be some clown who thinks any restrictions are unacceptable.Who cares if they aren't able to drive a Prius. An unmodified 1300cc naturally aspirated engine is not going to be able to produce the sort of power that is getting many of our young drivers into trouble through excessive acceleration or speed.
They are also a lot less likely to try and outrun the Police in this type of car and even if they do, they are not as likely to meet your family or mine when travelling at 200+kmh, often with the innocent parties getting cut out of the remainder of their car.
Many of the old Integras, Familias, Lancers, Sylines, Cefiros etc that are involved in fatal car crashes at the hands of our young drivers are far from standard.Often they have had suspension, engine and/or driveline modifications.that make them perform and handle far differently from their original design.
As long as we have the civil liberterians that resist any form of restriction, we are going to continue to see our young and inexperienced drivers over represented in fatal car accidents.

sylis04, Jul 2, 5:00pm
as i recall alot of deaths are contributed by 18+ people out there, so really its kind of a hard argument to uphold. because i know a lot of mature young drivers. its basically the dumb idiots who thinks its cool to speed, that kind of ruins it for the young up and comers of society. the law plays a big part, there way easy on driving charges. jail sentences need to play a big part then hopefully the idiots will learn to slow down.

taipan4, Jul 2, 5:09pm
All the dropkicks thaT WE SEE ON tv ON THE "POLICE PROGRAMS" a large percentage of them are drivers with no warrant or rego or have no liscense
anyway these dudes are going to keep driving no matter what because what have they got to lose,

steve312, Jul 2, 5:13pm
Soooooooooooo.-
.

Your idea is to do nothing then!

Great plan!

i-n-horz, Jul 2, 5:17pm
For a start.drop the pink sticker bullsh*t and crush the crap a.s.a.p

steve312, Jul 2, 5:21pm
And make the owner push the start button on the crusher.
You could sell tickets to watch the little w#@k$s burst into tears as their POS cars get flattened.

i-n-horz, Jul 2, 5:54pm
I don't know why NZ has a weak as piss attitude when it comes to lay'n down the law.
all for freedom of rights and all but when it comes to a blatant disregard for the wellbeing of ones or anothers life a suitable wrath shall be bestowed upon them to command respect for all.no respect no freedom.

lugee, Jul 2, 7:17pm
This just isn't plausible. People will still drive larger displacement cars, just like people still speed and drink drive.

pollymay, Jul 2, 7:37pm
Car crushing doesn't work cause it can be a mates car or whatever and if they are gunna loose it they will drive shitters. Most common car is NZ is falcodores, are you really saying someone getting their license can't drive the family car!

Most importantly bad drivers can crash a 1500 mazda, worst accidents I've seen are not usually blown V8's but vtec integras, lowered E series mercedes, old utes and n/a skylines that make no power at all. A modern ute makes 160kw, that is the same as my VN SS came out of factory with so it's less about power more about culture. Little johnny in his nissan rippin it up kinda thing.

Besides why does everyone want someone else to do something! Follow the little shytes home and tell their parents, we've done it before and mummy wasn't impressed that her kid was a vandal and hoon breaking into an empty paddock to do skids.

r15, Jul 2, 9:30pm
lol. 15lbs makes a pretty quick nissan silvia / pulsar / bluebird

i-n-horz, Jul 2, 9:59pm
If your prepared to lend your car to a disrespectful/careless operator then you deserve to have it crushed.if it's in such a state that it may cause an accident it gets crushed.if it's not legal, no reg/wof not a licence holder it gets crushed.driving in such a way/state that may cause bodily harm or loss of life eg: overly excessive speed, drink driving or fleeing the law the car gets crushed.imo I think it would work and at the same time rid the roads of dangerous junk.

curlcrown, Jul 2, 10:07pm
with propper driver training no such restriction would be needed.

i-n-horz, Jul 2, 10:33pm
+1.Educating the youngsters on respect for other road users, road rules and safety graduating as they get older to hands on driver training.

bill-robinson, Jul 3, 5:12am
Now there is a true fact.

mrfxit, Jul 3, 5:29am
LMAO . you are talking about modern teenagers with access to physically smaller cars but with far bigger HP's then 95% of us "older generation" had access to as teenagers.
The "respect" factor for police & parents was FAR higher back then as well.

mrfxit, Jul 3, 5:32am
Is should be fairy easy to set 3 limits for cars that would cover most vehicles around.
1: Max HP
2: Max cc
3: No performance mods to or replacements of the factory engines

mrfxit, Jul 3, 5:37am
What ever . had a few performance v8's doing burnouts etc around here this year.
1 of them got nabbed a few months ago for a burnout & I caught up with the cop just after that & he told me that .that MINT mid 90's v8 coon had no rego or wof. .
Don't expect that someone with a really tidy factory performance car wouldn't have a wof/reg.

Most of the teenager modded cars are either .
Badly done
Modded for looks only
Not modded for good handling
Not finished
*
& then treated as if they have magical handling & too often with a boozed or drugged driver, DUH well of course they are crashing a lot

Most ppl that have spent serious cash (Note: CASH not credit) on a v8 performance vehicle normally try very hard NOT to crash them, partly by 1st NOT putting themselves in stupid situations

mrfxit, Jul 3, 5:47am
Agreed that crushing in most cases doesn't work for your reasons but still a very good tool in certain situations.
Impounding has a better effect but costs more to administer it

r15, Jul 3, 6:28am
Part of the reason nobody respects the police on the road today is because they now have the right to make up charges that don't require any evidence if they don't like the look of you. For example excessive acceleration, cruising, sustained loss of traction.

Then there's the crush / chase rule.

If you had a car that cost 25k ticked up or cash and someone following you was going to crush it if they caught you, wouldn't you run! Aside from crashing the worst case scenario is they will crush your car. just like they would if you stop. For most young people 25k is more than a years income after tax

luckyluke02, Jul 3, 6:34am
And compulsary insurance!

racetoy, Jul 3, 6:34am
1300 single overhead cam and auto for the first 12 months no modifications allowedno exceptions

mrfxit, Jul 3, 6:40am
HELL YES, minimum of 3rd party tied to the licence, just like they do in the Usa.

r15, Jul 3, 6:44am
Then there will be an increase in accidents at intersections. Poor learner judgement combined with gutless cars. Pull out, have no power, get hit by nzs actual worst age group (45-60) who never will accept their driving is appalling (yet every day demonstrate to me they have no idea of even the most importan road rules)
