We know you are a jaffa. Only a jaffa would go that way. The mind boggles at people using that sort of a road to compare themselves with rally drivers.

No 2-Can turn off left before Plimerton shops a bit of a short steep climb and thru aresidential area then winds around lake paramata which joins tail end of Paekakariki route.Or alternatively turn off left after paramata bridge, winds around lake on otherside(more traffic uses this route). Most important thing is to avoid comuter traffic, starts getting busy after 3.30pm. I reckon return, via.Motorway route(faster speed and less braking to do) though is easier with a tandem trailer-especially with the extra payload of a car.

Just imagine what it must have been like when it was gravel. Driving over it you can almost feel the ghosts of old time racers who took it on in their Cooper S??

Are you guys talking about Moonshine (haywards to Upper hutt) or the Akatarawas (Waikanae to Upper Hutt). sr2's original post spoke of "but when travelling to the Hutt from the North I always go via Moonshine " which hints to me of Akatarawas. Both fine roads on the bike.
