Go hornnett.

hornnett, Jul 3, 3:47pm
Well anybody who is or had been in the trade knows exactly what i mean.So the question is does it happen in other trades!

ontwowheels, Jul 3, 4:05pm
Whilst I hear what your saying, and agree to some extent, what happens when that customer has a big job that has to be done by said workshop, who do you think they will take their car to- the mechanic who was helpfull and polite on the Ph, or the one who had no time for them!

hornnett, Jul 3, 4:10pm
IF they had a big job shouldnt they just book it in to get done instead of ringing up for advice!this is what normal people do.

tonyrockyhorror, Jul 3, 4:11pm
the one who has the cheapest estimate, of course.

kazbanz, Jul 3, 4:14pm
The one with the cheapest quote.

hornnett, Jul 3, 4:15pm
Estimate of a fault over the phone!Gosh wonder if this would never come back and bite you.Never do it untill you at least look at the vehicle.

hornnett, Jul 3, 4:20pm
Ok as its ONLY A FIVE MINUTE JOB[wonder how many time i have heard a customer tell me that lol] I quote $5

craigsmith, Jul 3, 4:35pm
Ummn no. They firstly try to ascertain the likely cost, and secondly whether the place is competent to fix it. And when they encounter unhelpful arrogant a-holes, they go somewhere else.

If you can't start talking to me intelligently about what to look at or possible causes, I am not going to be impressed. I don't expect free consulting but I do expect polite customer service with a view to securing work.

Would you like to let us all know the name of your business so that those who would like to avoid, can.

ontwowheels, Jul 3, 4:41pm
Agreed, and my point wasnt about getting a quote, what I meant is that the customer with a small job one day or after a few minutes of time for a bit of advise, well looked after could be a customer with a big job the next day.

I for one will go first to wofkshops who have been helpfull in the past, whether it was for a bit of advise, or a big job. I never go for a workshop on cost alone, often the cheapest quote is cheap for a reason, and costs more in the long run.

hornnett, Jul 3, 4:47pm
Oh so where do I buy that wonderfull phonethat i car look at and then diagnose that pesky car. What so wrong in phoning in to book it in!And as a general rule if you ring up a garage most likely they do sometime haveexperience with cars. They are not a help desk you know.
Do not under any circumstances start your conversation on the phone with"Iam ringing to PICK your brains"and so after years of hard learnt experience up want them to give it up for free. Most people in the trade show great restraint.

hornnett, Jul 3, 4:51pm
The advice is bring it in to get it looked at,how are is that concept hard to grasp.
This person has already ask 4 MECHINICS AND 1 ELECTRICIAN so which lucky garage got the job !none as they are on here asking.

hornnett, Jul 3, 4:54pm
Looks like you guys think it ok to phone in for a diagnosis of a fault, wonder if it will work on my doctor next time!
Ok you all guys give me a list of your occupations so at some later date i can phone YOU for free advice and hey I now know you wont mind.

ontwowheels, Jul 3, 5:12pm
I'm an aircraft engineer.
And I do see you point re how many mechanics have been consulted allready. but my point still stands a potential customer after a bit of advice could be a major customer well.

In this case a simple polite answer of 'check all your bulbs, make sure NONE are blown or incorrect. failing that you will need to bring it in for us to have a look" would be sufficient, take a couple of minutes, and could gain the goodwill of a potential customer.
I am not saying that I would expect a diagnosis over the ph. simply advise.

I recently went in and spoke to toyota for some advise on a job i was doing on my caldina. They were helpful and gave up 10-15 mins of their time. I later returned to buy several 100 $ worth of parts I needed through them. Time well spent on their behalf maybe!

kazbanz, Jul 3, 5:16pm
I pray you are NOT the boss or the receptionist at the company you work for.
That is to say I hope so for the future of the company

hornnett, Jul 3, 5:20pm
"We have checked bulbs which are all going and the same wattage, re-wired and re-earthed the wires AND changed the flasher unit.

What else could it be!"
"Have asked 4 mechanics including an auto electrician and they have no idea"
"Yeah, the wreckers have one at the moment. We just need to take old part down and collect other one"
and finally"Ohk, lets try that. Off in the rain i go"
And that was that.

hornnett, Jul 3, 5:23pm
Hope I am not the guy giving away information to customers when the boss is paying for my time.Maybe thats ok for you as you sell cars but what of us selling time!once its gone its gone not unlike if a car sale falls through you still have a car to sell.

hornnett, Jul 3, 5:27pm
Yea but thats a franchise and they would have charged the customer who car he was working on,or was it the service manager whose job it isto protect the staff from these free loaders.!
An aircraft engineer!and you were asking about fixing a toyota!

craigsmith, Jul 3, 5:41pm
You don't sell "information" you fool, you sell skilled (supposedly) technical labor, and resell parts. If you "gave away" a bit of information you might find your customers start becoming a bit easier to deal with. PLEASE let us know your company so we can avoid!

hornnett, Jul 3, 6:02pm
I sell what I know which is INFORMATION gee mate keep up.
Why would up want to know what firm I work for are you not all for ringing for free INFORMATION.So there is no chance that I will work on your vehicle. And as you appear to know everything maybe I could ring you.
Got to ask but what the hell is technical labour lol.

a18a, Jul 3, 6:02pm
lol dereailed thread. I had the same issue with all my indicators working & it still flashing fast on one side. I guess one of the bulbs wasn't doing its job properly at making it flash slower. I got a brake/park light and forced it into one of the indicator light sockets (it didn't want to fit at first cause of one of those thingies on the side of them) it then flashed at normal speed. so either the bulb i replaced was faulty, or the dual filament bulb must've put enough load on it to make it flash properly. that's my theory anyway

taipan4, Jul 3, 6:04pm
we seem to have lost the thread of the original poster here chaps, I think I'll just put on the tweed coat & brogues & go out for a trot down to the back paddock in the rangie , what what.

hornnett, Jul 3, 6:07pm
Buy another steering column from the wrecker and they will most likely throw in the rest of the car, and from there on its just a mater of try and see.

hornnett, Jul 3, 6:09pm
Nah the original poster is still outside trying to put out a small fire.

jared861, Jul 3, 6:11pm
Had a mate who had the problem of flashing too fast, it turned out he had put LED bulbs in and that caused the problem.
