Can a Cop give a ticket for guessing your speed?

Why do they waste money on radar, lasers etc that are only slightly more accurate if they can pull a number out of their rrrs +/-3kph!

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 29, 12:54pm
Well, we all know how honest all police prosecutors are.

As a fully qualified professional in the estimation of human speed to plus or minus 2%, with 35 years experience and 30 years in training others, I can assure you all, that less than 3% of people can accurately tell the difference between 3mph and 4mph (a 25% difference in actual speed) let alone just 3 or 4 kph difference at 100kph), without very intensive training and years of practice. Even then, most will agree that it is an art and one that many just cannot grasp.

Equally, from those on my very intense course at a well respected establishment, approved by the professional institute, only 3 out of 12 passed that section of the institute examinations, so to say that all police- who only have a few weeks broad training anyway, can estimate that accurately, is total rubbish.

Estimating the speed of a silent moving vehicle is tough enough, but when the engine/road noise is also added to the mix, and without the knowledge of what gear the car is in and what gear ratios are being used, I am afraid that most guesstimates can be totally thrown out of the window.

socram, your right about the respect thing, Alot of teenagers don't respect their mums and dad let alone anyone else. So they don't respect other road users either.

flack88, Jun 29, 3:51pm
Bridgeman didnt estimate the speed of those guys on Ducatis when he did a U turn in the Buller Gorge .

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 29, 4:05pm
Fair enough too. I don't respect them either. I mean, just look at the state of their kids!

The cop didn't "guess the speed of the idiot with attitude", he checked the speed against the calibrated and accurate speedo in his patrol car.

His mate had already been ticketed for exceeding the posted speed limit earlier in the evening, so what are the chances they were doing the same thing again! It certainly isn't unusual or beyond the realms of possibility to see the tryhard wannabes thrashing their street cars after leaving the speedway or drag races.

Everyone should trust the Police, after all - they will roll over & let the FBI come across the world & run amok with whatever they want - what next, your speeding ticket is on a LAPD computer so they can Rodney King the heck out of you next time youre unlucky enough to be in that country of criminals! Well - yeah, its heading that way - Team America : World Police!

Make sure your GPS is logging or it won't help.

So are your referring to there radar unit which agreed are certified & calibrated or there car speedo unit which I understand to be bog standard & thus likely to overread like most cars by anywhere up to 10%

He also got charged by police, found guilty in court then faced the police code of conduct investigations and lost his job, but lets not let facts get in the way of a police bashing aye

berg, Jun 30, 10:37am
My last guessed speed was made from bed early in the morning. Heard the Subaru wind up, heard it crash, got called to the scene by work, estimated the speed by sound and gear changes alone to be about 110, and,,,, it had just been radared by a police car at 107. Not bad from laying in bed.

"Vehicle speedometers are to be calibrated annually by appropriately qualified personnel in Districts. The speedometers of NZ Police vehicles that have not been issued with a certificate of accuracy within the previous 12 months are not to be used for speed enforcement purposes.

Districts are to issue Certificates of Accuracy Speedometer and Odometer (POL430) when vehicles pass calibration." http://www.police.govt.nz/resources/2007/speed-enforcement-guide/

Not before 35 years of Anthony Dale Bridgman handing out potentially bogus infringement offence notices with his obvious belief that he could so with impunity. But let's not let the facts get in the way of the company line that any bad eggs are driven out by the 'good' cops.

BTW, he retired, he didn't 'lose' his job.

Bull dust, have taken tickets to court a couple of times in very similar circumstancesand won both times,in one of those the judge was real peeved off and told the cop to stop wasting his time .i did have a good lawyer [ was the points i was worried about]

lpggas, Jun 30, 12:40pm
Thanks for info , wish Id known that when I was pinged over queens bday weekend for 105 .

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 30, 12:42pm
I've only had one 'estimated' speed and I won that in court too. It didn't stop him from issuing the ION though and I'm sure we're all well aware of how people take the easier (at least short term) path and just pay up.

tgray, Jun 30, 2:17pm
I don't like the fact someone else can tell a cop you were speeding and they will give you a ticket for it.

msigg, Jun 30, 3:20pm
offrd1, they can ticket you by estimating, as seen by you, but hey you spent alot of money and time(which is money to some)and won in court, if you paid the ticket that you were speeding in the first place then you would have saved lots of money.

flack88, Jun 30, 3:24pm
Yeah tonyrokhorror theirs alot more to, which i cant bring up here bout that POS ,do no of an incident where the real "police" had to step in to tell him to pull his head in.Have taken cops to court on an estimated speed on a bike and won.!

hornnett, Jun 30, 3:43pm
I agree with you, look at the idiots in here posting can only guess what they are like getting a speeding fine.

hornnett, Jun 30, 3:53pm
Slow learner!

offrd1, Jun 30, 5:02pm
Maybe he does the miles,we can't all be perfect

lpggas, Jun 30, 5:05pm
What a clown . You're obviously one of thebird heads who think because you travel everywhere at 99 your a good safe driver , & before you get on your high horse I'm not condoning excessive speed, my gripe is I got pinged at the end of a passing lane for 105 which is against the polices own policy as per the link above

offrd1, Jun 30, 5:39pm
AND i bet if you sat in his car for the day you could find enough bad driving habits to loose his license .for some strange reason just because these people do not go over a 100k they think they are good drivers [ I'm not talking dangerous driving here ] .I can assure you the biggest pain i find on the road are the idiot drivers that will sit in front of you doing 80k and not let you pass [ I'm a truck driver & our trucks are limited to 90k]
