It always pays to shop around. I got some new monsson shields off Ford, they were $60 a pair and the wreckers were $90 each!

You expect to pay PAP prices even thought your not picking the part! From inside the motor trade, I tell customers anything below half retail price (new part) is cheap. Get real - your shopping around has been good but dont bag people that are more realistic then you

I would expect to pay a 1/4 to a 1/3 of retail and you can do it most times, I just bought a rear VN bumper for $30. If you have a look at most mid 90's cars that are listed as 'wrecking', there are not many bites for the parts and thats the private sellers, the business wreckers are just way past reality. Im looking at buying a VN Calias to wreck for parts for me and to make a few xtra $ but I know that mostly it will become scrap metal.

Got some more landcrab parts on the way from the UK. Didn't even bother looking locally this time.

I was at Pick-A-Part once looking for a Mazda Eunos 500 intake hose as mine had split. There was this dude there going through all the Mazda Eunos's, removing only their intake hoses. He had 2 off & working on his third. Luckily I managed to find one before he got to it. The lady at the counter said that wreckers often source high-demand parts from them to on-sell.

Well the wrecker have no real skill in life so have to resort to stripping cars to make money. Then with little to no education they rip the public off. I always buy of EBay USA or Germany and get it landed for way less than the local prices. Ten they try unskill themselves by trying to get people to recognise them as "dismantles".- .hahahahaha

LOL you can buy those brand new! If you can't afford new you tape up the one you have until you can, why anyone would waste money buying a second hand one that could be nearly as bad is anyones guess.

That about sums it up.

Are your prices inclusive of the pick a part fee!

I see someone is selling a BMC/BL part for $25. I have said part on the way for $4.yep.lol

I know a guy who used to be a wrecker. He bought a Nissan Cedric for something like $50 by tender. He sold the rear window for $2,000 to an insurance company for an accident repair and scrapped the rest of the car.
You don't have to drive past many wreckers yards to work out that most of the parts are scrapped and only a few items regularly sold. Hence wreckers have to make good profit on what they can sell because the rest is just scrap that they have to process and in some cases pay to dispose of.

Most wreckers have been superLAZY when it comes to recycling left overs. In the old yards, stuff like unwanted glass would simply be smashed , dropped in the trailer & dumped in the. rubbish dump. Bolts taken off parts would most often simply become part of the ground. Etc etc Basically what wasn't sold in a few months, would be dumped or crushed instead of working out a simple way to recycle. ******** In the newer yards, most of that stuff would be left with the importer at port of origin because they only import "cuts"

$120+ new from Mazda vs $16 from Pick-A-Part. You do the math. Plus, one inspects the part before buying to ensure it's not "as bad." But hey, if you've got money to burn, that's your prerogative.

Butmost dismantlers are like that now.Because IAG/state insurance run(partstrader) which forces wreckers to 1/2 there prices to supply panelshops cheep parts so have to make up for the short fall somewere.

pick apart here doesn't match the cars in their yard with their website. If you want a major part you can't find out the kilometers or condition unless you have the vin. I'm happy to pay more for a returnable or checkable part. I'm after an ECU for a 95 bmw 320 but would have to visit every pick a part every week to find if they have one, then I would have to take a chance that it's useless. If someone gets a part from them and tests and sells it on TM, I would expect them to double the price for the hassle and risk that they have taken.

looked around for a gearbox for a 1.6l 1991 pulsar
seems to be three price brackets out there
couple of wreckers wanted $140 Next 4 wanted $650 Last 3 Wanted $1350
thats for a 20year old used part
franc123,
Aug 12, 6:30am
The chances of that are remote at best unless it has already been replaced with a new one at some point. If you want to spend $60 on gas driving around pap's only to find theirs are stuffed , if available at all, and then pay the same again for another used one from a more expensive wreckers andwaste a day then thats your prerogative.

That's insane, I'm getting a second engine and gear box (minus the head though) for my car for $100 lol
jason_247,

all the over $1k prices were parts of the "parts connection" group of wreckers

Also everyone seems to have left out the best option of all.
Hori it up for $0 then do a skid
pollymay im looking at you

Do go on, I don't deal with wreakers as they seem not to stock BMC/BL parts.

I had a '90 Nissan Sentra once, and was running rather rough. In the end, I found it had a broken float on the carburettor. So, the wrecker in Lower Hutt (they specialise in Nissan parts) wanted $200 for the carb (!). After a few phone calls, I got one from Wellington for $50 including the manifold.
stepman69,

LOL. You obviously don't know much about Pick-A-Part cos you spend your plentiful supply of money on new parts. They have a website that lists their vehicle stock (& part prices), so I knew the odds were in my favour. Anyway, you're missing the whole point of my post, which contributed to the topic of this thread, i.e., exorbitant prices charged by some wreckers.
Don't ya just despise no-life narcissistic haters who make pseudo-witty OT comments on other people's posts.
