Ultimately you have learnt two important life lessons

1. Never trust people at face value
2. Always get a car checked out before you buy it

intrade, Sep 21, 5:20pm
and 3. never again buy a mitsubisheap

studio1, Sep 21, 5:22pm
I've said it before and I'll say it again - never buy a car beginning with M. It's bound to cause you trouble and when it does, it will cost a fortune to repair the damn thing.
Mitsi especially. Every mechanic I've talked to has shaken their head in despair when I mention that name, so there's got to be something there.

As for OP's gripe, I agree that you've been cheated with regards to the cambelt. Car dealers are notorious for being dodgy - it's been that way for years and it doesn't seem to change.
Not saying all are like this but there's always one around the next corner ready to screw people over and take their money in return for a POS.

I'd never buy a car off a dealer on TM. I have purchased a car from a private seller in the past, and it was a good deal.
If you can, take a complaint to the Motor Vehicle Dealer's Association regarding the misrepresentation.

I totally went by the 100% feedback to be honest trdbzr.Instantly thought he was trustworthy.

a.woodrow, Sep 21, 5:23pm
I take it the seller won't entertain the idea of a refund! Disputes tribunal is cheap even if it goes nowhere, only about $30, and the threat of it might make him refund you

sully12, Sep 21, 5:24pm
Will keep that in mind studio1.This man was not a dealer but someone who seems to be into restoring vehicles so knows enough to know the true reason he was selling.

intrade, Sep 21, 5:27pm
if you go to disputes tribunal and think you win you have to ask for a distress-warrent this makes him pay imidietly when you get avarded the money , otherwise he can pay 5 bux and thats itand you have to start again. distress warrant will seeze any money in his bank accounts to pay you. but i doubt you got a chance unless you got it in writing or witnesses.

scoobeey, Sep 21, 5:27pm
Yes dont leave it as you are NOT happy .Pursue it as best you can and let us know how you get on:) have another wine ok worry about it tom:)))))

sully12, Sep 21, 5:29pm
I have begged him to refund me a.woodrow but he said no and to onsell it myself as there is nothing wrong with it!I wont do it morally.

sully12, Sep 21, 5:30pm
I have a witness intrade that was there with me and heard it all. Thanks for the advice - will pursue on Monday and see how I go.Thanks scoobeey I'm off to have a wine now.

pollymay, Sep 21, 5:31pm
Was the cambelt frayed from age or rubbing! Maybe it was done but an idler was out of line wearing the belt. I've had that happen before.

intrade, Sep 21, 5:33pm
dont be rude to start with see what he says if he gets rude straight away then you know he is a wankel-engine

zephyrheaven, Sep 21, 5:34pm
Hang about

So I go & buy a 2nd hand washing machine tomorrow, say a gentle annie - didnt do any research of the brand etc (I have the internet - duh) goes OK for a few days, craps out & a tech tells me the motherboard is fried & gonna cost a packet

Its Sanjay the washing machine sales mans problem!

Obviously you called your usual mechanic about buying a RVR - I mean, I know I hang up on people that ring up asking advice about buying lemons but.

I LOVE THE WAY THIS CUNT-RY IS GOING - NOT

gusthe1, Sep 21, 5:34pm
There are some good lessons to be learned about how not to buy a car from these statements

sully12, Sep 21, 5:35pm
Not sure on that pollymay but the mechanic was pretty sure it had never been done and if it had been changed as stated it had less than 30,000 wear.It would never have been so bad. It's ready to break now.

intrade, Sep 21, 5:37pm
you should read it all if the seller comes up with a explenation that it was done but seemingly not correct like rubbing tensioner then he did not lie and he would not have knowen of the problem. you should see soon if he is surpriced to start when you tell him or if he is rude and ignorant= he never changed the cambelt

sully12, Sep 21, 5:39pm
zephyrheaven if I was told it had a new motherboard and I should expect trouble free washing for quite sometime - years in fact then I would be pissed off - yes.I tried to research the RVR also but there is limited info on the model I purchased. It seems they are extremely rare. All I can find is they have a similar engine to the evolution 2L which I knew were fairly reliable (in my opinion)I was on the internet all night last night trying to research the vehicle including reading reviews, etc, looking up Carjam for correck kms and other info, also.

zephyrheaven, Sep 21, 5:39pm
People ask me all the time - has the cambelt been replaced! I say - Unless I have replaced it personally - assume it hasnt

Thus far I havent been caught out

sully12, Sep 21, 5:41pm
also zephyrheaven regarding the way the country is going.People with no morals that will look you in the eye and deceive you.I don't care what you are buying or how much it is.If that is the way the country is going it's pretty shameful.I expect decent NZers to act in a certain manner.

sully12, Sep 21, 5:42pm
anyway rant over but wishing I could at least place some feedback to get it out of my system.I put it straight into my name also to protect him from parking tickets, speeding fines (yeah, right lol).

zephyrheaven, Sep 21, 5:44pm
So armour up

I do

Ive bought a few problems in my time, even a RVR (my only mitzi!!) and everything was wrong - more than youve listed so you might have got a good one

But Ive learnt - and from that, Ive made better decisions

Sorry if I come off the cuff & snide, but I think the best decisions are never made in haste

sully12, Sep 21, 5:51pm
zephyrheaven yes I jumped into it but our other vehicle was in a crash Wednesday night so we needed a vehicle urgently.I had been messed about with a trader yesterday with a vehicle I thought I had but sold to someone else.So last night I had missed two days of placements so yeap I jumped at it going by his word.If all it needed was a rust repair I was ok with that, all I wanted was mechanically sound, nothing flash.

sully12, Sep 21, 5:52pm
The annoying thing was although rough on the outside if it was as stated would've been great till the end of the year and been good for trademe pickups :-) with the extra boot space.bugger damn

motorboy2011, Sep 21, 6:01pm
The point is not if the vehicle should be expected to last for X amount of time given what it cost. The issue is you were lead to believe the cam belt had been done when it hadn't. If the advert stated that it had been done and you now know it doesn't I'd be taking him to small claims for mis representing the car. I'd 1st give him the option to correct his mistake though. You would need see it trademe can give you a copy of the classified ad it was when it expired,

sully12, Sep 21, 6:03pm
The guy looked like the fat controller off Thomas and the Tank Engine.who wouldn't trust that!"said post wine"
