I knew you would.

Can't imagine too many Hog owners using such language.

sifty, Sep 21, 6:11pm
Defending them.!

purple666, Sep 21, 6:11pm
Steer clear of the old shovelhead sporty's if you haven't owned one before as they will put you off HD's for life. The 1200 Evo's are faster than the 883's but a good 883 is a great place to start.

Lol . rest assured mate, I can be slightly more expressive if you get my drift, but I prefer to be able to continue posting on the message board, as opposed to having message board holidays for being 'overly expressive' !

Shovelhead sporty!

Aren't they different things! I thought the shovelhead was the big twin - separate engine/box (with the non parallel pushrod tubes) and the sporty was unit construction ironhead (parallel pushrods).

Could be wrong, not really my thing.

How sad, this is exactly the attitude that perpetuates the 'us' vs 'them' mentality between harley owners and everyone else. I confess, I have a typical universal japanese sprot bike, and I have plenty of fun when I just dawdle along, which to me seems like I enjoy "The Ride" as much as any harley owner. You dont understand jap bike owners, and I guess we don't understand harley owners.

sifty, Sep 21, 7:19pm
Because 'real men' have moustaches and wear leather, like those blokes in the Village People. They are very manly, bet they score the chicks.

toshibanz, Sep 21, 7:23pm
Never understood the them and us thing, if there is one.

Simply for me, I like V8's. The noise, the vibration and the low down torque. I feel aHarley is going to get me that on two wheels.

I might be disappointed, but I want to try and get something that is not going to be a money pit with know common faults. I also don't want to be spending a fortune. Speeds not an issue, I don't want something that will be breaking any speed records !

sifty, Sep 21, 7:26pm
Best to take a couple for a ride if possible, go for it, enjoy the ride.

splinter67, Sep 21, 7:27pm
You want a V8 on two wheels buy a ducati

therafter1, Sep 21, 7:27pm
1200 suzy bandit .three or four bills lol

More bang for your buck.

nzdoug, Sep 21, 7:38pm
I like the first one 515953674 as it is 15 years newer.
Looks stock except it an 883 w 1200 heads. Not sure if the bottom end of 89 Sportie beefed.
Ask your local dealer

splinter67, Sep 21, 7:43pm
I think he is talking about this one NZDoug

Shovelhead';s get their name from the shape of their rocker boxes, ironhead sporty's have shovel rocker boxes so shovelhead sporty's. As for the push rods, sporty's run quad cams, big blocks run single cam and the new twin-cams speak for themselves.

cassina1, Sep 21, 9:08pm
So true I demoed one once and the sound was the most attractive thing as the ergonomic fit of the Monster was not quite right. I was a little concerned noise testing would come in with WOF too and it would fail.

i dont like harleys. they have the "look at me" thing going on with the stupidly loud exhausts and bling bling. I think riding the isle of man on a jappa is more manly than cruising around looking "cool" on a harley.

sifty, Sep 22, 5:04am
I think riding the Isle of Man on a Harley would be plenty manly.

whqqsh, Sep 22, 5:16am
I wouldnt mind a Harley & if youre put off by the 'look at me' stigma then youre too worried about what others think & have to look at yourself & why this worries you. They dont HAVE to be loud & sure they arent a race bike just like a lot of Jappa models arent (horses for courses & all that). My biggest concern is theft (I live in South Aucks) & the idiot drivers out there these days (it was bad enough 10-15 years ago when I was riding almost full time but that was ended with a serious off when a redlight runner got me & broke most of my left side & was only a gnats away from having left leg amputated). Ive had a few bikes short term but the wife aint keen & Im always worried about the next hospital visit so its nowhere near as enjoyable as it was

desmodave, Sep 22, 7:47am
Ride what ya like there is no need to feel insecure about your choice of bike. Dont feel sad for all the gunna's out there either, if they realy wanted a bike they would have 1.

clampits, Sep 22, 8:27am
I would say go for the for an evo ,preferably after 91 as they have a stronger 5 speed box. If you get an older 4 speed you have to treat the box as vintage, no power shifting or changing down at high speeds . Iron heads are a bit long in the tooth now . 883 to 1200 kit done yourself for under $1500.
Iron heed sportster are notand will never be Shovel heads
