Lots of of late '40,s early to mid '50,s Fords had push button start. My Austin A40 had apull start.

a.woodrow, Oct 22, 10:16am
Was neutral broken huh

a.woodrow, Oct 22, 10:17am
ve commodore has the same "feature"

trade4us2, Oct 22, 10:19am
There was probably a stupid interlock that stops shifting to neutral while the accelerator is flat to the floor.

My father,s car had a foot start29 chrysler, but my uncles car was push button, guess which one my brother and I used to drive the most. Key start is the most logical and useful, you jusy have to think what you are doing if it is raining and you have a load of baggage

Beats cranking!

trade4us2, Oct 22, 11:57am
Here's a report on the Lexus that crashed:
http://autos.aol.com/article/toyota-tragedy-saylor-family/

However there are a number of different reasons why accelerators get stuck wide open, apart from floor mats.

splinter67, Oct 22, 12:01pm
If those people had stood on the brake pedal the car would have stopped as shown on this message board a few months ago

lookoutas, Oct 22, 12:26pm
That would be news to most of us!

trade4us2, Oct 22, 12:44pm
No, in many cases the brakes just wear out.
When the accelerator is wide open:
1. If something is holding the accelerator down and you can push it aside with your foot, do that for a few seconds, otherwise

2. If the brakes don't slow the car down
3. Turn the ignition off. Do not buy or use a car where the ignition cannot be turned off instantly.
4. Put gear into neutral.
5. Steer along a hedge or bank.

lookoutas, Oct 22, 12:49pm
Well how about that - I read the report and It had happened previously in the same car, but that guy had more brains than a cop and sorted it by chucking it in neutral. A pity no-one acted on him reporting that the non standard mat had caused the problem.

I always use an over-riding push button in my boat. Heard of too many keys being screwed off under panic mode, when engines have stopped in dire situations.
Also good for winding engine over while working on it, and you don't want it to fire. Also good for clearing the exhaust.

No production motor car can out drive its brakes.

splinter67, Oct 22, 5:07pm
ahh number 2 stomp on the brake pedal it will stop

trade4us2, Oct 22, 5:10pm
When the brakes are red hot, the brakes don't work very well at all. I was going down a hill in the Coromandels towing a trailer, and the brakes stopped working.

Besides, a number of the reports about uncontrolled acceleration stated that the brakes stopped working. So you are dangerously wrong.

chebry, Oct 22, 5:23pm
You are a simple unit I can tell.im not talking about resting your foot on the brake pedal until you get fade like an idiot, Im talking about standing on the pedal so you stop.Your results may vary but Im right I know how to drive

bill-robinson, Oct 22, 5:40pm
now there is a bold statement

fordcrzy, Oct 22, 5:43pm
i wired a push button start to our forklift.the thing starts like a champ now! And on an old fiat twincam i had it never started right until i fitted a push button start.must be something to do with the rotating ignition switch assembly

fryan1962, Oct 22, 6:12pm
There was a case in melbourne a few years ago,the lady could not get car to stop.she rang police.key would not turn off, could not select neutral, standing on brakes did not work.she travelled 22klm and ended up crashing when she came off the motorway

I do not think standing on brakes.will stop powerful new cars

morrisman1, Oct 22, 6:15pm
you bet they will, I cant think of any vehicles that would do 0-100 faster than they could do 100-0.

trade4us2, Oct 22, 6:38pm
I will admit that I have not tried using the brakes to stop after a stuck accelerator. The one time that happened I immediately turned off the ignition. It is possible that the people who have said the brakes wouldn't work were complete idiots, since there are a lot of those around.

thewomble1, Oct 22, 11:00pm
I know a bloke who accelerator jamned while going down a hill.yep he did right .turned the engine off.good so far. corner came up and went to turn the steering wheel and could not because the steering wheel had locked. He had turned the key too far.
If it had a push button starter system he might have been able to turn off the engine but the steering would still be able to be used to steer with.

gadgit3, Oct 23, 5:25am
Thats unfortunet. how many cars lock the ign when you turn the key to the lock position! I haven't found one yet every car I have been in you need to pull the key out of the barrel to release to lock pin. What kind of car was he driving!

timmo1, Oct 23, 6:43am
Because you are ignorant!

chebry, Oct 23, 6:47am
Cant wait for some fool to invent that feature and claim it as a new idea

bill-robinson, Oct 23, 7:32am
it is a bit hard with a tranverse engine and FWD,you have to line up the little hole in the wheel with the crank dog on the engine
