How about a nice big red Emergency Stop button mounted in the middle of the dash that cuts the ignition or fuel solonoid shut off.I have fitted these to heaps of engines in the mining industry and they are regarded as essential equipment on most machines in the workplace. Why are cars so special that nothing like this is required.

Wrong ,the key off switch would still be on the steering column as mandated by laws where vehicles are manufactured

gilco2, Oct 23, 2:24pm
not sure what you mean there. If I push the stop button on mine in emergency the steering wont lock.Doesnt have any key, not even on steering column. In normal operation when you push stop button it will lock the steering.Wont switch off unless in Park.

May be nice to havethese electronic start/ imobiliser things but when the crap out its $1000odd to replace.

gilco2, Oct 23, 3:17pm
yep but hopefully wont need to

The simple anwser to this is it allows for a comfort access system - my key stays in my pocket, I put my hand in the door handle and this unlocks and opens the car and I push the start button to make it go - simple.
The steering lock is now electronic.

I had a 57 morris oxford (Indian taxi) that had push button start hahahaha I always thought that car was ahead of its time

My sister has a citroen c8 van and it starts when you turn the stereo on, damn french cars electrics.

In my bosses' VX Land Cruiser you unlock the doors with the remote, then put the remote back in your pocket, and start the engine with the START/STOP button. Makes it unlikely you'll ever lock the keys inside!

Other than that it is a totally pointless gimmick IMHO. But then. on a toy car like a Honda S2000 where the whole idea is that it's about having fun by pretending you're driving a race car. why not!

gadgit3, Nov 2, 5:14am
You know you don't have to unlock the doors with the remote. if you reach for the drivers handle with the key in your pocket the doors will unlock. Standed Toyota Smart Key feature.

Often the push button start does not require the insertion of the key but mearly for the key to be in close proximity (inside) the car.

At a guess the start solenoid wire would be attached to the starter solenoid, not really rocket science is it.Might be hard for you but even monkeys could figure out how to by pass it.
