there's no WOF in QLD either, and because I am living in QLD and can see the effects of having no mandatory regular inspections I am going to vote and say NO to abolishing the WOF in NZ - we need to retain a tried and proven system to keep the cars in a reasonable standard. I think abolishing a WOF on a less than 2 year old car makes sense though.

Agree phillip.weston. I think our system is another form of tax. There has to be a middle ground.

WOFs (and rego for that matter) in NZ is CHEAP! In Australia it costs near or over $100 for the equivalent inspection in states such as NSW and VIC, and a years worth of rego varies from $700 to $1100 depending on state and if 4, 6 or 8 cylinder.
Combine that with the huge wide range of different makes and models of CHEAP cars, NZers don't realise how lucky they have it! Sure the cost of petrol is expensive but that's about the only cost which is above average around the rest of the world.

Just wish they would revive the original safety aspects of WoF and stop getting tricky about superficial stuff like the height of indicators.

also I LOVE that you can place rego on HOLD in NZ if you aren't going to be using the car. If you want to do the same in Australia it's basically TOO BAD and PAY UP, or you have to DEREGISTER your car and hand the plates in! Though having said that to re-register a car it's just a matter of another normal inspection and then getting new plates.

Change it, but keep it.

Abolishing WOFs means people wont even maintain the safety features required tto keep a car safe.
Brakes,Tyres and Steering, not worried about.
No thanks.

With conditions. You get busted operating a POS you walk instantly AND get demerits, regardless of whether its registered to you or not. If the car is bad enough or been stupidly modified in any way whatsoever bye bye plates andoff to the crusher.

The current system is simply ineffective in getting rid of the hazards to human life that the MTA are prattling on about.

If the current system works why do we have so many vehicles with coloured stickers attached.Dump WOF'S!

.total bullshit.nobody wants to drive around in an unsafe car
usdefault,

If that was the case you'd never see cars getting pink stickered stupid.
Plenty of boy racers cut their springs to lower their cars. They don't give a hoot how safe the car is once they've done it.

The whole thing is a joke, cars are not safer now,ppl take no responsibility for their vehicles now
I had car in oz and never got w.o.f and maintained it to good standard

Licensing and warrants only affect the honest people.Cars are cheap and plentiful for those who chose to rip the system. The system is a joke and open to too many interpretations. It just doesn't work!

QLD requires a RWC to transfer registration after that it is the responsibility of the operator to maintain the vehicle in a roadworthy condition same as here.

We have a van and a car in Oz and don't need a warrant and we maintain our vehicles to a better standard than we ever did in NZ.I think it's also probably due to the fact that I'm paying $1400 to register two vehicles per year, so I'm gonna make dam sure they're on the road whenever I want them.
fryan1962,

I see cars driving around in NZ,with one head light missing, the drivers are content that wof inspector will find fault
you can get w.o.f and blow a globe within 5 minutes
Tahnasha I had one car in oz for 20 yrs it had wof when I bought it here in nz I get my car done every 6 months, the guy does not check it,as he knows I do, he seriously does not even put it up on hoist
so how is this system better
he is known as the blind man wof guaranteed

I'm one of the idiots that wouldn't know if there were safety issues with my car, so I vote no. I don't mind them changing the system though. $50 every 6 months is a rip.
