Have you had anything to do with insurance companies!

yes it sounds straightforward to fix the situation.reality!

Since you obviously dont know I should tell you when a car has its registration change without a notice of disposal being submitted the previous owner is contacted by mail by the LTSA to ensure the transfer is correct, So your fraud has already been logged should the real owner decide to pursue the matter, Me Id come round and stomp your face in but other people use other methods of retribution

I'd like to know how you do this kazbanz, without the consent of the owner of the vehicle.

kazbanz, Nov 17, 8:02am
Think about it though. 1) the vans owner turning up at the flat is EXACTLY the response they and the other flatties actually want.-Keeping in mind that the van owner did a runner to avoid debt.
2) yes the letter will get sent out to the residential adress on file. Im betting it isn't where the person is more likely where the OP is. Again Im sure the OP and other flatmates would be more than happy to hand said letter over to the van owner if he fronts up and they have had a "frank and open discussion"
Yes I agree what the OP did was pretty silly but lets not forget the van owner left without paying debts owed.
As a landlord myself I know darn well how difficult it is to actually get money out of an ex tenant once they have moved out of a place.

chebry, Nov 17, 8:15am
If these flatties had some balls they would have fronted the van owner before he left and taken possesion of said van and sold it to deffray debts rather than using this backdoor method.

kazbanz, Nov 17, 8:19am
Um actually -the OP in their first post said--" flatmate did a runner in the middle of the night owing 3 of us in the house differing amounts."
Perhaps I misunderstood that statementbut my take is that a gutless rat snuck out whilst they were sleeping. So what you suggestwasn't an option

bellky, Nov 17, 8:19am
Since you wont answer my question kazbanz this statement of yours is garbage:
Credibilty = Zero in this circumstance.

If the van gets pulled by the cops it will be impounded and the cop will take the plates off. Plates that are recorded as missing or stolen won't get any fines sent to previous owner.
I deregistered a bike when the mate that bought it off me wouldn't pay the rego after it came of restoration register and he sold it to someone one else. Gave him week to sort it out then deregd it, no comeback at all.
The TA hasn't commited any fraud as the guy made a verbal contract that the van was his in lieu of debts. Be smart idea to take the plates off though.
The people at VTNZ! didn't even care about Id when I did my one, just punched the numbers and gave me copy of paperwork. 2 min job.

justa concerned citizen.whom after reading a fewof your posts is worried about your state of mind.

bellky, Nov 17, 12:39pm
Tell someone who cares; you'll notice I used no question mark.

kazbanz, Nov 17, 12:44pm
Id be making darn sure I had a stat dec from every witness to cover myself.

tgray, Nov 17, 2:22pm
Are you sure he actually did a runner!
Perhaps he met a hot girl and is staying at her place for a while.
OP, even if he left for good, this is not going to end well for you, as you really did a stupid thing. Even if you are owed money, you can't de register someone else's car as vengeance.
If you simply took possession of it as part payment in lieu of money owing, that is another matter and has some legal standing.
The fact you post it as your 'hair brained act' suggests you know you have messed up. Good luck digging out of the hole you have made for yourself.
