Minimum you would get is to pay for new rego/ vinning etc & return the vehicle to the original owner

I say . you say. but you said he did. . but he said he didn't.
Unless it's in paper . PRAY

so its civil!

Both ways I suspect, depending on the exact situation. Either way, without a bit of paper from the original owner, can get a bit tricky

Sell it and IF he comes back say it was stolen and you didn't bother reporting it because it was his prerogative. Thieves aren't known for their brains and I doubt he's heard of carjam, let alone has the money to pay for or English skills to read a report.

It would have been even funnier if you had reported it stolen also. He would have been just driving down the road then get pulled over. And have the police arrest him for driving a stolen vehicle. If he had just bought it with cash off a mate it is unlikely he would have a receipt or anything else to prove he is the correct owner.

im more thinking of parking tickets etc, because he has no idea that the vehicle is now not allowed on the road,he will continue to use it until he either gets pulled over or when he goes to wof or register it

You have just amitted to a crime in a public forum.
danchop,
Nov 10, 3:40pm
youd have to explain to me the crime exactly,he owed me money so when he left to god knows where,my only means of getting my money back was in his vehicle. i legally transferred his vehicle into my name, because i can!

No you didn't.You are not in possession of the vehicle, you do not legally own the vehicle, you completed a change of ownership fraudulently.
Also, since you now are recorded as the owner (even if it's dereg), it is you that is responsible for it in so far as the police, NZTAand councils are concerned, that means, if he gets a ticket for no reg, wof etc - it's you who gets it sent to them and it's you the courts will come after when it's not paid. You accepted responsibility when you changed the ownership.

Because you say he owns you money does not give you the legal or moral right to do what you did. There is a prosses you must go through before you are intitled to take legal possesion of his property. Siply having the car registered to your name does not constitute legal ownership, and if the matter is taken to court you have weakend your position signifacanlty.

Thought both parties had to change their parts, wind up (o:

No, only the "buyer" has to complete the change.

That was my thought too, the registered owner has to show I.D when disposing of vehicle, even when done online a license number is needed.
danchop,
Nov 10, 4:00pm
the system is quite flawed really when i can do what i did
danchop,
Nov 10, 4:08pm
and i presume in a concil parking ticket situation, thier device when they punch in the vehicle plate number would come up as "not found" and then they would ring police i spose
intrade,
Nov 10, 4:08pm
i cant seehow you can dergister the vehilce without the numberplates and all.
danchop,
Nov 10, 4:09pm
you can by just inserting the word "missing" on the form it means you dont get a refund in rego which is still on the vehicle
intrade,
Nov 10, 4:11pm
then you be able to deregister all and every car you see on the road some moron could deregister 10,000 cars in 1 month if all he would do all day is deregistercars he seen.
curlcrown,
Nov 10, 4:11pm
Not if it's used properly. You are now in a position where you could be in deep $h1t.
danchop,
Nov 10, 4:12pm
yeah but you have to change ownership first @ $9 and then cancelling registration is $9.10
