Yes speed a factor and closeness travelled - van following another car which braked heavily, van driver braked and van skidded into bikes. No alcohol involved and driver in a bad way with crushed legs. I suppose as driver young can say an inexperienced driver.very sorry for the bikers.

bjg, Dec 2, 6:49pm
my son passenger in front of van.very sad crash!

alfred011, Dec 2, 7:55pm
I heard the van locked up crossed centre line hit 1 bike drivers front side, spun round 1 hit side door,1 hit back door.

pnh4, Dec 2, 8:08pm
@ (bike owners), when riding I never assume, like when driving that I,ll make it thru the next intersection, if you know what I mean. City riding makes you sooo alert in this respect.

flashgordon_nz, Dec 3, 12:22am
the 70 km zone is actually just south of that corner. the straight you see pictured, before the turn onto the bridge, half way along that straight is the new temp 70 zone. 4 bikes were knocked down, on of them is a good mate. he fortunalty survived. the information he has told us, 2 deceased, 1 critical, he is the 4th, with servere grazing, broken finger.
His only comment was "the van lost control infront of them", which we assume there is more, but he cant say.
While we can assume the van driver may have been distracted, it could have possibly been a tyre blow out, etc.
I drive that section of road daily, and a lot of the possibilies mentioned in previous posts are possibilities. However, i am in full support of the bridge being replaced, the best thing they could have done as a tempory fix is to put in place the temp 70 area. ive maintained that for a good ten years.
However, when slowing into the 70 zone (southbound) or maintaining 70, heading north then accelerating up the straight, i have found an increase of clowns being too impatient, and wanting to pass into the 70 zone, or out of the 70 zone.

mrfxit, Dec 3, 6:45am
Yea it's a funny old bridge that 1, tight enough that 95% of ppl are really wary of it & slow down, unlike bridges that are a bit shallower & wider, then you get ppl not taking any notice & BANG.
Most of the others like that 1 in Taranaki have been replaced already
Thank fully this accident had nothing to do with that bridge.

"i have found an increase of clowns being too impatient, and wanting to pass into the 70 zone, or out of the 70 zone."

Did you mean to say >>>>>

'i have found an increase of clowns being too impatient, and wanting to pass in to oblivion in the 70 zone, or out of life in the 70 zone.'

mrfxit, Dec 3, 6:48am
Mmmm come to think of it, I seem to remember that the Midhurst (north end) bridge is a good example of a similar bridge thats a little wider & shallower but gets a lot more accidents.
Very similar approach & exit as well

I had my share of mbikes in 60 -70sas everyday ( & nightto tech &back) all weatheronly mode transportasaprentice ,it was all i could afford . But once i saved enough it wascar for me. Thattemporary NZer was a colloquial termwe were all called , & ACChave the figures to prove it

offrd1, Dec 3, 6:02pm
NOT THE TIME OR THE PLACE.you are an insensitive idiot

oliver6, Dec 3, 6:29pm
Nothing insensitive about it at all. The discussion is about two motorcyclists dying in an accident, and someone was reprimanded for mentioning the term "temporary New Zealanders, which has been a common saying for decades, and isn't offensive or insulting.

chevcamaro, Dec 3, 7:18pm
rip guys, ride hard on the highway to heaven, didn't know you but respect your life.

splinter67, Dec 3, 7:21pm
+10000000000

offrd1, Dec 3, 7:26pm
Bet if it was your family you would think different

oliver6, Dec 3, 7:31pm
My family are all motorcyclists as I am. We understand that is is more dangerous to ride motorcycles than to drive a car. 5 motorcyclists died this last weekend in road accidents. It is a tragic fact and we are more vulnerable, and more of us die and get injured than drivers.
If one of my family had an accident, I wouldn't be offended by someone commenting on the fact that it is dangerous to ride motorcycles.

dr.doolittle, Dec 3, 7:45pm
Get over yourself & climb down off your high horse.
People die all the time from many different causes.
It's good to talk about it, even if you dont agree with whats being said.

offrd1, Dec 3, 7:48pm
Nothing wrong with the comment its just bloody poor timing.
I also had to deal with a motorcycle death on Takaka hill a couple weeks ago,he was a good mate,i came across the accident in my truck, one of the first there not pretty,if i saw a comment like yours after that i wouldn't as polite as i am now .let them R.I P .at least for a while

oliver6, Dec 3, 7:51pm
I didn't make the original comment about temporary NZs etc, I discussed it as others did. It's not an insult to the motorcyclists.

offrd1, Dec 3, 7:59pm
,Nothing to do with high horses, read what i said,i don't disagree at all, just the timing and this thread wasn't started for that discussion.

dr.doolittle, Dec 3, 8:01pm
fair comment.
You can call someone insensitive, but you dont have to call them an idiot too.

offrd1, Dec 3, 8:07pm
OK,was just annoyed.had comments like that after my mate was killed,he was still laying on the road,so still very raw

outbidyou2, Dec 3, 8:12pm
3rd page in Motoring. Had to have a look

snoopy221, Dec 3, 10:57pm
I'm probably as informed as most.

Beyond ANY Doubt there is NO FAULT on the bikers.-R. I .P.

Next year i DO NOT SEE ANY REASON TO HAVE
The *Toy Run*- AND Skidfest -----------
At the same time.
It's just like so f**n damn hard whena group of bikes meets a van like dat.
Actual fact it's lucky the death toll isn't HIGHER.
R I P

pnh4, Dec 4, 8:42pm
If the van had 7 & maybe luggage aswell, it could have been a blow out.

johnf_456, Dec 4, 8:45pm
No use blaming sides, until you have evidence to decide that. Just like innocent to proven guilty.

sr2, Dec 4, 10:17pm
Hang on guys; I look at a thread like this and all I see is the friends, parents, children, partners, family??
