As you live in chch it's likely depending on when you got the tankful at z that you had got the 1st load of summer diesel , during winter months the South Island gets winter spec diesel which has all sorts of additives to stop it waxing & icing up during cold snaps .I'm not involved in the technical side of things but that could be a explanation for the change in performance
