THANK YOU pebbles. That is EXACTLYmy point and the point I repeat when it comes to the safety equipment of a car.
You (and all the other posters here) DON'T know the OP.
Im not having a go at you but advice offered needs to reflect that fact.

What is easy and odvious to one person can be like learning hebrew to another.
That was shown to me by my darling wife. Besides ONE error in judgement(marrying me) shes a sane inteligent person.
I asked her to move a Ford mondeo. She couldn't put the car into reverse. I hopped in,Without even thinking about it I slotted it into reverse and backed up. She diddn't know what she diddn't know.-the reverse trigger wasn't squeazed

Thats a bit mean, heaps of Westies are helpful.

pebbles61, Dec 30, 10:44am
You're right Kazbanz.

I point I am trying to get across is for the OP to get a workshop manual, get advice (be it online, mates, mechanic, car club etc) and give it a go.

If they're unsure of anything etc then stop and get advice.

I'm not saying just run with it and have some fun with a dozen beers on the side, give it a go, but do it properly.

The simple fact is that people are going to work on their own cars, some to save a few dollars, some for the simple pleasure of doing so.

Still a no no, going by the rules

johnf_456, Dec 30, 10:46am

The discussion on a thread that was pulled lastnight was how to get this board back to helping posters and giving good information again.
Stopping all the in fighting and jumping on other traders when you don't agree.
I suggest that if you don't agree, you either ignore the post or vote it off.
I think the thread was pulled because we were naming other posters, so if you wish to discuss this further, NO NAMING of posters and it might just stay IMO (o:

We are gonna have to agree to disagree. I respect your opinionand Im not for a second saying don't work on your own car. Im saying with this specific part with this specific poster to do the job supervised by an experienced mechanic.

kazbanz, Dec 30, 10:56am
-I think that the discussion Pebbles and I are having is how it should be.
He doesn't agree with my opinion. I don't agree with his.but we aren't calling each other names over it.

Anyway, for the OP:

General tips on brake pad changing:

-Jack the front wheel(s) up and support them on a jack stand(s), never work under a vehicle that is only supported by a jack.

-Remove the wheel

-Remove the caliper, this is normally held on with two bolts (might be a bit different for more modern cars like yours) *Important* Do not let the caliper hang on the brake hose, use zip ties to support the weight on a piece of the car (suspension and steering etc) when you're not handling it.

-There should be some sort of retaining pins on the caliper (with split pins on the ends) that hold the brake pads in, remove these.

-Take out the pads.

-You'll need a brake caliper spreader to push the piston(s) back so you can install the new pads. You'll need to take the cover off the master cylinder reservoir here to be able to do this, but be careful as the brake fluid will overflow if the level is high (you don't want brake fluid to come in contact with the body work!)

-Check the piston dust cover and sealing ring for wear and replace as needed.

-Install the new pads

-Reinstall the retaining pins etc.

-Reattach the caliper.

-Repeat on the other side and rear if you're doing them all

-Bleed the braking system all round (with a one man bleeding kit makes life SO much easier).

-Drive and crash your car =D

Hmmm an internet argument/debate without name calling, we must be doing it wrong!

splinter67, Dec 30, 11:03am
No you wouldn't you had your chance the lady from p north was looking at cars in auckland all you guys offered advice but no one would go and actually help. I tried to help a guy in hb and got a warning for my troubles hopefully jmma can contact the op

edangus, Dec 30, 11:03am
This board has always been like that. I don't think it will ever change. Keyboard Warriors flexing their wireless willies. When all most people want to do is help. Sure people can get it wrong sometimes and its easy to point out without being a rude/arrogant git.but not for some.
We actually lose a lot of contributors due to the egos of others.
Then we have the rule players, who think every one is out to get them and take great delight in finger pointing or reporting simple misunderstandings. Just remember when you point a finger, three point back at you.

I do hope that we continue to have TM MB for some time to come. Motoring should be the friendliest board of all (IMHO)

johnf_456, Dec 30, 11:06am
you got a warning say no more, im not risking it

llortmt, Dec 30, 11:06am
This thread is proof of what the MB has degenerated into there used to be a backbone of experienced, qualified, professional tradesmen who regularly posted here. It was a kind of motor trade smoko room to which anyone was aloud access! I'm too embarrassed to post here using my business name/account so I created a personal account at the start of the year and used the name Jazz gave me!

Dont be afraidIwasdoing a fullrebuild &modifying the engine on my mini at 17, as an apprentice couldnt afford to take it to garageso boughtamanual & went for it . Already done the brakesbefore that(drums )which are harder to do thandiscs . Luckily boss begrudgingly allowed me to usetheworkshopAH.

splinter67, Dec 30, 11:14am
All the lady was asking was for someone to look at a car on a car yard and comment on if it was any good no personal contact required but not one offer of help

master-trader, Dec 30, 11:14am
Sweet, point taken.

master-trader, Dec 30, 11:17am
Thanks for the generous offer, great to receive. At this stage I wouldn't want to trouble anyone unnecessarily though.

master-trader, Dec 30, 11:18am
haha .could be a great idea for an auction.

master-trader, Dec 30, 11:21am
Yip, this is why I came in here in the first place.get the impression I may have stepped in midway through some kind of keyboard warrior battle

jmma, Dec 30, 11:21am
If you get stuck, let me know on here, we can work something out, rather you be safe than sorry. (o:
