Is it just me or do you guys find following a vehicle travelling at 90 kph UNTIL you pull out to pass then increases speed to 105 only to slow to 90 kph when lanes merge!

There should be a trick name for this phenomenon.

there is .its "Richard Cranium Syndrome" This can be shortened for quick use.

I recently found out that driving instructors could be blamed for teaching new drivers the wrong thing here. They say to the pupil that ok this is a passing lane it is safe to increase your speed to the 100k limit in these lanes as these passing lanes are always put in completely safe plasses to drive at the maximum speed allowable. I was a passenger when this was explained to the pupil once not long ago, also the parents beleive this is true as well and so it goes right through the family that it is ok to go faster on passing lanes.

A mate was getting frustrated that a car was hogging the passing lane, passing at 95km/h and holding everyone else up. Running out of patience he opened the gas and went around the outside. Turns out that the guy was passing at a slow pace because the car in the left lane was a mufti cop!
Got done for crossing double yellow lines but he said the cop was quite understanding of the situation

Haven't been driving long! It might go back as far as the days of horse & cart. Twas a contest as to who's horse could pull the hardest.

Sounds typical of driving instructors, When I was doing my full license test about a decade ago, the testing officer got annoyed with me because I actually slowed down to 30k coming up to some roadworks. His logic was that someone may hit the back of my car as a result. He was then happy for me to travel at 50K instead. In otherwords he got me to exceed the speed limit by 20K and I still passed the test.

When I did my HT the instructor told me not to pull over and let slower traffic pass.He said he never did, they can wait!We had a rather tense argument at that point.I still passed.

Glad he wasn't my HT instructor, mine taught the opposite, which I have done ever since. Wish others would do the same, just because I drive something that looks slow dosn't mean I go slow, so pull over and get the hell out of my way! Rant over

Its not just you, but sadly the law does not allow you to speed to pass.

it's SO frustrating, especially when you're doing 80-something behind someone slow, and the vehicle you're driving is limited to 90!
however, i have also learned thru observation, that sometimes it's caused by Richard Cranium. but sometimes if it's just the general flow of traffic speeding up to 100 then dropping down again, it's because there could be one slow vehicle. as everyone is getting past them, this speeds up traffic as the vehicles behind "move up the queue" to pass. then the passing lane runs out, and if you didn't get to pass the slow driver, everyone has to drop back down in speed again
hope that made sense!

This is the main reason why even if a car is 95kmph on the open road I try to safely pass it as soon as possible because then when I come across a car doing 80kmph It is much safer to pass one slow car at a time as opposed to trying to get past two.

happens on any multi-lane road, not just passing lanes. Try driving up behind someone on a motorway, again theyre (happily) doing 80-90, indicate, move lanes & attempt to overtake, suddenly theyre doing 110 & irrate that you dare to overtake them!

Accident waiting to happen. You guys constantly whine that speedos aren't correct to excuse your speeding. Then you have to pass someone doing 95. Perhaps their speedo isn't accurate. Accident waiting to happen.

Happened the other day, mitsubishi pulls out in front of me at an intersection on a blind rise so I have to brake really heavy (car full of tools that weighs 2 tonne-ish) then dawdles along so I mash the loud pedal on a straight with good visibility, nek minute pacing me at 110 so drop a gear and smash it past 130. I was starting to get aaaaaangry at them, then they turned off when I got pass them. They deserved a wheel brace smack through the centre of their windscreen for being blatantly dangerous with that pull out manoeuvre, nevermind the speeding up.

Seems we are surrounded by ignorant drivers. Is it only in this country !
hpaul,

Discretionary.
Those traffic officers with a brain allow 110-115 in the right circumstances.
It should be more, they're encouraging drivers to spend longer on the wrong side of the road potentially in the face of oncoming traffic. People are dying because of this attitude.

#15 ,why is that an accident waiting to happen!you use alot more fuel sitting behind drivers that constantly ,brake uphill, slight bends, speed up slow down.Am happy to sit behind a driver doing 95 ,if they can drive, goverment social engineering is partly to blame.

Only if you follow too close. Don't get me wrong, following somebody who brakes for every corner, bridge (even if straight)and oncoming car (WTF!) drives me nuts too.but you can usually do it at a constant speed if you sit back.
Everytime you have a car coming at you in your lane, passing where they shouldn't, you could almost guarantee it was because they were stuck following one of these muppets. I'd rather they traveled at a constant 80 than up down up down up down.
modie61,

I agree smac,a lot of drivers dont keep a constant speed up,best way is as you say to give them plenty of following distance. Those drivers that brake for oncoming traffic are apain in the yyou know what, some are very unpredictable aswell.

I agree, but often speed cameras are at the end of passing lanes.

That keeps getting mentioned but I never see it. Must be a Waikato/Auckland thing!
hpaul,
Mar 7, 8:44am
Haven't seen that personally, maybe it's a North Island phenomenon.
I'd suggest that drivers equip themselves with a camera alert satnav and a QUALITY radar detector, those that drive so equipped are said to be in the top 10% of safe drivers.

I don't often travel out of the waikato / auckland but seen it a few times around especially over the past year. Just past Orewa going towards Warkworth is a good one for it.

Brilliant idea - and zero tolerance in the 80kph lane and MUST be in that lane if not overtaking. Problem solved.
