Yes but it is usually 80k's to 110! crazy selfish control freak drivers.

The CVIU often ticket truck drivers for moving over to let slower traffic pass them. If you cross the white line on the left, they can book you for " Failing to Stay Within Marked Lanes ".pathetic, but true.

normal human psychology
a wider space is safer - thus its ok to speed up
people drive on instinct most of the time, because the brain isnt needed to pilot a car at 100

While I agree, I do not think promoting break the law is best approach. If you can pass during a passing lane go for it, if not wait to next time. Its not like its gong to kill you if it takes you a bit longer to get to your destination.

If they can't drive to save themselves and keep slowing down, braking heavily, turning off without indicating, slowing dangerously over blind crests then yeah it could kill me. I really don't see how a lolipop with a number on it has any significant bearing on that.

If its safe to overtake before the passing lane why not!Chances are the slow driver would speed up the moment they reach the passing lane to prevent overtaking.
wrong2,

relatively few would be doing that
the speed up is largely due to normal human psychology

I gather you must read that article on Stuff about bad driving habits.Something about perception of wider lanes.

The only short passing bay down the coast here, incensed drivers that been held up all the through the hills, find the c.t thats been holding traffic up,wont move to the left, and have seen drivers undertaking,as well as another,at the same time going over the double yellows! The bay ends with a curving blind bridge at one end,and sweeping corner at the other, the only saving feature is wide shoulder to,avoid them, these drivers deliberately speed up and Fail to keep LEFT,and are the most dangerous and arrogant drivers on the road. The passing lane is a double one.

nope
ive been interested in driver training & crash survival mentality since before i was legal to drive
the speed up is down to unconcious risk perception
many people behind the wheel are not thinking, they are driving on instinct

Slow driving is a product of a lack of confidence and skill. Naturally, people who are overly-cautious and insecure about driving will only speed up on straight and easy "passing lanes" where they can see that no danger is present. Add to that someone tailgating them and of course they will speed up.
I've come to expect it from obviously poorly skilled drivers, so I will happily speed to get past them. The really c**ty ones will slow DOWN on straights when you can't pass.

I drive Tauranga-Waihi return all the time. There are few passing lanes but for the rest of the trip the road is hilly and winding so the only real opportunity to pass is on these 3 passing lanes. Some ar5e will happily travel at 85kph and ignore all behind until those 3 passing lanes come up and will head straight up to the 110kph mark since the road straightens out. As there are no other opportunities to pass, many drivers (myself included) will get up to whatever speed is required to overtake. (sorry JohnF I dont care what you say). Lately there have often been coppers parked up at the end of the passing lanes :(

Iv'e done about 1600km this week and found passing lanes full of it. Camper vans that won't pull over into the slow vehicle lane. Coming out of Milford a couple of days ago reminded me why I brought a 5.4 litre car. Jack asses the lot of them.

This happens more than you might think.I did this once back when i was bit younger and sillier.LOL You'd loose your license these days for the way i overtook this bunch of cars though.
The funny thing about it though was the cop was downright embarrassed about it and pretty much let me off scott free! Those were the days.

Makes perfect sense, although I'm afraid it's completely impossible to comprehend for about 75% of NZ drivers.
Too many drivers seem to completely lack the capability of thinking or seeing what may be happening in front of the car they are following.
Good examples: - You are doing 100km/h, somebody passes you just to turn off to driveway 300m later so that you have to slow down. - Drivers who start passing you 30 meters before town 50km limit turns to 100km limit. So when I get my speed up to normal 100km/h they are still hanging on right hand lane and have to finish they pass by doing 120 or something. Then half of such idiots slows down again to 95km/h
And of course the passing lane idiots who do not understand that I can speed up from 80 to 100 because the queue in front of me is speeding up as cars in front of me got past the slow one.

so how is "I try to safely pass it as soon as possible " a accident waiting to happen . youre obviously one of those sheep who thinks that all it takes to be a good driver is drive at 99 & wear your seatbelt .
lpggas,
Feb 12, 6:40pm
I will do that if its safe to do so if the clown i'm behind hasnt engaged brain & has suddenly let a significant gap open up prior to the passing lane to the slow truck /caravan up ahead . Otherwise come the passing lane which in many cases are ridculously short said clown will pull into right hand lane & dawdle along & lo & behold the lane runs out just as they're alongside the truck . see dangerous crap like that happen time & time again

I usually drop back a bit at the 400m sign, and then give it the jandal with about 200m to go.
Timed correctly, I enter the passing lane about the same time as the car I'm aiming to pass, but with enough pace on so that even if it speeds up, I just scoot on by. Then it's indicate, check, and move over to let anyone faster pass me.
(Strangely, nobody ever does.)
lpggas,
Feb 14, 8:58pm
If you tried that round my neck of the woods you would end up having a head on with the truck coming the other way as the muppet in front off you goes into the left lane initally & then wakes up & suddenly realises its a passing lane & moves into the right hand lane without so much as a look in there miiror . FFS people passing lanes are signposted at 2km , 1km & 400mts so if you intend passing then get organised & indicate right well prior & go straight into the right hand lane & stick the boot in, dont go left for 1st 50 mts & then suddenly pop into right hand lane without looking

Ha.Jazz some anonymous user on the internet makes some unfounded claim about Police tactics or behaviour and you leap on it like it's the proven truth every single time.
I guess he said it's true, so it must be.

I do think the NZTA (or whoever is responsible for education) should do a education campaign for passing lanes. It doesn't need to be artsy or flash, just simple instructions and 'common sense' (i.e. if you have a line of cars behind you, let them past!)
With all the hype over making 'creative' road safety adverts, I think they have forgotten how to simply EDUCATE people how to drive better.
lpggas,
Feb 15, 7:01am
unfortunately that will never happen with our current cardigan wearers in charge of road safety in NZ . They continually try to dumb down our level or driving skills . Remember a year or so back there ridiculous camapign " lose your confidence save a life " . WTF was that all about !
