recently brought a 1999 honda odyssey (december)from a car sales got told its been regularly serviced 3,000 ks ago was last service & had new seals, cambelt & top tank on radioator had a minor leak al been replaced has been leaking alot of oil, & last couple of days the transmission won't change out of 1st gear, Or wont work in manual, (tiptronic) the light on the dash (D) flashes even when it's in Park, does it sound eletrical or is the transmission had it

rojill, Feb 16, 7:28pm
Have you checked the transmission oil level !
Then talk to an automatic transmission speciaiist.
May be expensive to fix.

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:38pm
yes transmission oil is fine, we do have protecta insurance up to $4000

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:39pm
really didnt need this trouble as have a bby due in 6-7 weeks

splinter67, Feb 16, 7:39pm
Now that was money well spent

jmma, Feb 16, 7:42pm
Its OK, baby wont drive for another 16 years, you should have it sorted by then (o:

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:42pm
all we have to pay is an excess of $250. you'd think the probelm would of been picked up 3,000ks at last service! we were told a seal was replaced before we brought it

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:44pm
lol ^ its bby #4 need a car to cart them all around lol,

NZTools, Feb 16, 7:45pm
If you bought it off a dealer 3 months ago, take itback to the dealer. It is his job to get it sorted for you.

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:46pm
yes it was brought off a dealer :) thank u NZtools

jmma, Feb 16, 7:49pm
Dont you know whats causing them (o:

thejazzpianoma, Feb 16, 7:50pm
Keep a close eye and records of what the dealer does to fix, plenty of slimy ones around and may look for opportunities to cut corners.

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:54pm
partner thinks we brought it 4th of dec so might be over the 3 months :( will check paper work in morning

tigga212, Feb 16, 7:56pm
i might just have to put a bad word out here about the dealer

stevel_knievel, Feb 16, 7:58pm
Three months would be November 16th.

tigga212, Feb 16, 8:01pm
ok will defently look into it tommorrow

gammelvind, Feb 16, 8:11pm
Why! You haven't spoken to them yet, at least give them a fair go. Plus you do have a mechanical warrenty for your 13 year old purchase. Things do go wrong with old cars, give the dealer a chance.

n3d4sp3d, Feb 16, 8:16pm
if trans is allredy in fail safe I wouldn't reccomend driving it any more as you may do further damage, contact the dealer and make arrangements for the vehicle to be towed on a flat deck truck or trailer not with a rope so as to minimize damage to the trans. Don't go in all guns blazing if vehicle not covered under dealer warrenty they may fix for you under good will

meathead_timaru, Feb 16, 9:46pm
"3 months" doesn't have anything to do with anything.

franc123, Feb 16, 9:51pm
Let the dealer sort the diagnostics and repair, it must have definitely logged a fault code for the indicator panel to be flashing but could be solely electrical or the ECU's reaction to a mechanical issueI'd wager the trans oil would never have been changed, you never ever fall for the "Oh its been well serviced" line, to most people (including dealers) that means its had engine oil and filter changes every now and then and a boot of the tyres.Unless you are presented with a wad of receipts for not only basic engine servicing, but also trans oil, coolant, brake fluid, spark plug, timing belt if that applies, air/fuel filter changes etc from a previous loving owner, assume it hasn't been carried out right and make sure the person conducting the independent prepurchase inspection you got checks the condition of these things.Very rare that cars get serviced properly when out of factory warranty, you may be finding out why the previous owner traded it in.

wiseone58, Feb 17, 6:00am
Three months is for shoes bought new, you should be patting yourselves on the back for buying that warranty. For a used car I am not sure what the dealers legal obligations are, but some person may turnup who knows.

Never a truer word written. Well summed up.

_peas, Feb 17, 6:28am
I totally agree with the OP's thread title.Wouldn't touch one of these. But on the plus side it sounds like it has gone into a limp mode to prevent total destruction so the issue might not be as serious as you think.

ksam, Feb 17, 6:56am
Of course, if you're saying it is the dealers fault, and he must have known, you're saying when you bought the insurance the car had the fault, so not covered by the insurance, as it was an existing fault, so you may need to think about how you word the situation to the insurance people, any sniff that they don't have to pay and they'll be into it, insurance companies make money by not paying money.just a thought.

tigga212, Feb 17, 7:27am
i relise this car is 13 years old but is what we could afford, i'm not really sure were i go from here guess make contact with the dealer & go from there, when we brought it the protecta insurance was on all of the dealers cars, the car had been serviced at Honda, when we took it for a rest drive evrything seemed good as gold, dp looked under the bonnet & noticed the radioator had a crack dealer got it fixed before we took it.
