BMC parts

Is there anyone in NZ that specialises in parts for BMC cars. Looking at helping a friend out with a tidy 1100. Leaking crank seal and exhaust.

Swift Automotive, Christchurch. Top guy and most helpful.

why anyone would own one of those pigs is beyond me. and i served my time on them.and back then it felt like a sentence.

Why would you bother replying if you don't have something constructive to say! I honestly can't understand why anyone would own a Japanese car, but I don't jump in every thread and condemn those that do.

Far cheaper to source parts direct from the UK in most cases.

Swift is good, got new SU carb parts off him.Dont worry bout oil leak and exhaust leak,it factory standard!

gsimpson, Mar 22, 7:59pm
Thanks for that. Will look them up. I know about leaks as i have an old Landrover. Although modern seals and sealants make a big difference.

Iona Motors New Plymouth might still have some.

Wouldn't you be able to get the crank seal just about anywhere!Saeco etc!

Did my 4 years hard labour on them tooin OamaruWas all uniparts thenin blue and red packaging. NowI havenerves of steel for it !

gsimpson, Mar 23, 1:29pm
Probably, but there may be other parts needed. In any case this is a small town and parts may need to be ordered anyway. You have more chance of getting the right part from someone familiar with them.

supernova2, Mar 24, 3:27am
BY the way are you talking front or rear crank seal!Rear is a bit ofa mission to say the least!

gsimpson, Mar 24, 5:13am
Front. We are intending to lift the engine our anyway and has to easier than a Mini.

ballin2014, Mar 24, 5:44am
dose ssift automotive just do austin parts or can they supply other BMC parts like 1960's / 1970's bedford or wolseley

supernova2, Mar 24, 8:44am
Less than an hours work and you dont even have to take the bonnet or radiator off.

with the front oil seal you may find the crank pulley has a grove worn in it which would make fitting a new seal pointless.you can buy spacers for then though.you could well discover that parts for old British cars are not that hard to find or that dear.they may be old but the same part eg an oil seal would have been in use for 20 years in various models.unlike jap cars where everything can be changed every 6 months.also 'performance" parts for classic racing may be actually cheaper than standard bits and too a higher spec ! certainly found that with my V8 Rover.also don't beleive anyone that says parts are impossible.i remember failing a WOF on the Rover because of a CV.some windbag visiting the garage wanked on about how i would have to send away to England and the car would be off the road etc.puffed out his chest and made out he was the big expert.20 minutes later i was back with the part from REPCO.if he had still been there i would have stuck it up some orifice.

mark68, Mar 25, 6:57am
ps.if you are lifting the engine out i would fully recommend fitting a top steady bar to the cylinder head.not hard and takes a lot of strain off the engine mounts and oilseals.mechanically these cars are hard to work on.but unlike jap cars you don't have to worry about all the wiring.rule of thumb.if in doubt about whether to fix something while it is still in the car.or pull it out.pull it out.and the manual will suggest using various BMC special tools.which nobody has.so be prepared to improvise .good luck !

About 20 years ago I replaced the gearbox bearings and clutch on a Mini. Not too hard. Still have a puller I made to get flywheel off. Job not too dificult though.

Swift is 95% FWD "A" Series BMC. Has SU Carbs and other "A" Series stuff used in other BMC cars.
