Jazz or other VW know-it-alls

Any reason not to consider a 2008 1.8 TSI passat?

intrade, Aug 27, 12:59am
can you get 98 octane bp? at all times

floscey, Aug 27, 1:06am
its an ugly car , but hey we all know what your taste in cars is like.

mopeds, Aug 27, 1:24am
Very good cars, the 1.8 TSI motors are bomb proof, the VAG autos are solid with no serviceable components, same as in the MK 4 golf, millions and millions of those autos were made, I wouldn't buy the diesel unless it was NZ new mainly because the DSG has a critical service schedule, the VAG hasn't even got a dipstick.

ryanm2, Aug 27, 1:28am
So these are not DSG gearbox then? Is that a positive or negative?

mopeds, Aug 27, 1:39am
The DSG was new back then, it only went into the diesel and the golf GTI with paddle shifters, the V6 got the tiptronic, some ppl might go shopping for the DSG but the VAG was a superb trans, they went until they blew or sometimes the loom would start to breakdown and log a fault code, but basically they are a very over engineered transmission made to handle twice the power of your car, like all Euro's and Japs 2008 was when budgets got squeezed and corners got cut, yours is a throwback to old school German reliability.

I had just incorrectly presumed all the B6 passats had the 6 speed DSG. Also looking at the 2 litre turbo variants and the 3.2. I know the 1.8t in 2008 replaced the 2.0 as the entry level passat unless I got that wrong too.

daryl14, Aug 27, 2:18am
My 2.0 fsi 2006 wagon has the 6 speed dsg and turbo. As does the audi equivalent.

intrade, Aug 27, 2:22am
tfsi = turbo seneric injection
its a turbo direct injector only 98 octane in the tank or forget it

ryanm2, Aug 27, 2:55am
as it should - i presumed they all had the DSG, the entry level 2.0 fsi and the replacement entry 1.8tsi. How is your one on fuel? Any things you dont like about it?

daryl14, Aug 27, 3:07am
Can't fault my passat. Loving it. A very cleaver piece of kit once you learn all its little subtle features. If I had to dislike something, it would be the automatic locking doors that don't auto unlock when you stop or open the drivers door, which can probably be changed.

cagivachick1, Aug 27, 3:46am
bet its not a w8

vtecnet, Aug 27, 5:31am
Should last a while, my 1998 Golf GTI still works at 203,000k and 17 years of age, even with the remapped ECU and 18psi boost.

mark.52, Aug 27, 6:27am
Where did you get the ECU re-mapped, and was it "chipped" with an after-market accessory? Which one?

What KW/nM changes were advertised or achieved, if you know that?

tamarillo, Aug 27, 2:04pm
98? Well yes they say it's best, but rest assured there are many of these engines around NZ running on 95 just fine. My Audi specialist is not concerned.
Otherwise just check servicing as always.

vtecnet, Aug 27, 8:12pm
I ordered a remapped ECU from the UK, was 1/2 the price of having it done locally. advertised 40hp and 100nm gains, which I believe, 0-100 is now around 6.8 Seconds, which is fast enough for a work hack

mark.52, Aug 27, 11:37pm
Nice. What's the brand name of the chip?

vtecnet, Aug 28, 3:09am
Ebay seller dark-tech and he uses maps from http://www.eliteremaps.com/
for $350 I had a used ECU included that he had remapped in the UK, with the immobilizer removed so I could plug and play.

ryanm2, Aug 29, 4:24pm
So ,should I pay the extra and get the 2.0 turbo with generally higher spec interior, more airbags, dsg etc etc or get the cheaper 1.8 turbo with the plain jane interior, less airbags and non dsg 6 speed gear box? Generally about a 3k difference between them.

vtecnet, Aug 30, 2:22am
Just buy which ever model you like, I have owned both types.

I like having a manual gearbox and i do loads of k's, i got mine for $2700. due to high k's.

My Mk5 was 15k, drove it 18,000k and sold it for 12k, as I found that it had too much road noise, for some reason the Mk4 has less.

I prefer the simplicity of the older model, it doesn't rely on 98 octane fuel and it doesn't have direct injection, which often has issues with carbon buildup.

My good car is a 5 series, the Mk4 Golf is a work hack.

vtecnet, Aug 30, 2:41am
Whoops, i should have read that properly.
Ignore my post :)

ryanm2, Aug 19, 6:35am
thank god - It confused the shite out of me.
