Bullet proof engines on the whole but jeez they are noisy maybe check injection timing as a start.

if you check engine code and it is D8A then it shouldnt have thrown a rod, the later DHY engines are the ones which throw rods but even then it is very uncommon.
Head gaskets on earlier ones are composite and break down, essentially rotting and then fail. Are there any other signs of head gasket failure!
Check fuel is getting to each cylinder by loosening each of the injector pipes and looking for fuel dripping out after cranking the engine.
is it a bosch injector pump or lucas! the bosch have the "UFO" boost compensator on the top (only turbo models)
