I was going to ask the same thing esky. Was the rego on hold? How long had it been out for? How long since the wof expired, when you were caught driving it?
Didnt you also say: "So had to reregister it from scratch"

Hint: don't do stuff that gets you demerits.
Or if you do end up with demerits you get plenty of warning you're entering the 'danger zone' i.e. getting close to a hundred points.
