Just got back from a trip to the airport using the tunnel both ways. Got passed by a woman in a black Kia SUV, doing at least 90 - 100km (I was doing just under 80) and she changed lanes 3 times. PING! And yes, there are cameras inside the tunnels.

. and note the number of fatal's where they weren't wearing seat belts.
Too many people seem to think that they are above the law.

Exactly what I have been saying but there are those who are always prepared to dispute for no good reason. again serves that person right !

Exactly.

That was exactly what I thought EXCEPT I don't agree that drivers have to learn. Sorry I'll rephrase. -I genuinely feel that the 80km/h limit still in place 1km after the tunnel exit is wrong thinking on the part of those setting the speed limits.

Whatever they thought doesn't give anyone the right to contravene those limits as they presently stand!

NO SPEED , NO PAY.simple.

I do agree that the restriction goes too far past the exit. Perhaps they could introduce a stepped increase otherwise it could create a “drag race†type scenario. But I think the gradual slow down before the entry is probably the best approach. I have heard that the 100 kmph will be restored in due course and NZTA have acknowledged a recent petition had merit to restore the limit. A work in progress obviously.

Jeez - I just had to go back and see what started all this (besides me)
ema popped a hernia pretty quick off the mark, and I can see that the goat agreed with the speed limit. Then normal ones got there nickers twisted. A good constructive argument is beneficial, but name calling etc, is pretty stupid. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has had a yellow waved at them by now. If not, then I'm disappointed, as I've had one for much less, and a oncer. kaz doesn't like the limit outside the tunnel (you been pinged there kaz?:-)
Anyway - What is the tolerance? Is it 91K before the light goes off?
Might have to take a look-see this weekend and hope I don't join the baddies. But I'm not a numpty most of the time - unless I get one of those numb'pty's in the right jandal leg, and it gets too heavy at the wrong time.
Forgot about the GPS loosing grunt. 50mph on the speedo is not accurate, so might have to do some rev checks before-hand. See - spend unnecessary time in the tunnel speedo watching!
Keep cool.

The whole of the original "news" from the nz hearld included information that the speed limit of 80km/h outside and away from the actual tunnels would be restored to the 100km/h that existed before they were built - but the 80 inside the tunnels would stay. Seems some of you didn't read past the headline . Lol!
gedo1,

. and it is only 1 vehicle in 1000 that have been caught by those cameras. I know of at least one other suburban area, (with a posted speed limit of 50km/h, with full housing both sides and many side roads on to it, plus a school) where the average percentage of vehicles being caught speeding (i.e. at a minimum of 61km/h) is . 25%. That's one 1 in every four! Whew!

Well then it's a good deposit then . that is if the fine funds are directed towards tunnel maintenance. probably not. who knows.
ema1,

We're talking about the present. not the future, some folks think the future is here already and are getting pinged . funny that !

What is the speed limit during certain hours (speed and times usually posted often by flashing alternate diagonally set lights on those signs) near those schools you mentioned gedo ? Unless they don't exist there at those schools but should do the limit is 40km/h. and passing a stationary school bus with passengers either boarding or getting off is 20km.h ! How many folks actually observe those limits or indeed are even aware of them, going by what I have seen at different times . precious few !

Cameras, yes. Speed cameras, no. Only speed cameras are at each tunnel entrance and exit.

And I bet she got to where she was heading to a whole minute earlier. If that.

It defies logic totally but lots of folks wouldn't know what the hell logic actually is, then there are those who do but can't/don't know how or just won't apply logic either. full stop !

The last time I drove up the Southern Motorway to Auckland, most traffic seemed to be operating to a 110km/limit from Pokeno. then about a 120km/h limit from Hill Rd Manurewa. then about 125km/h from East Tamaki thru until about Ellerslie Panmure highway.
A few years earlier I lived there and drove that road often, it was astonishing seeing the Auckland traffic with an out-of-towner's eyes!

I wish! Never ever seen anyone doing 125kph from ET north - certainly not during the day time and rarely see anyone exceeding 110kph these days from Hampton Downs north.
The current 80kph limit from Karaka to Hill Road (road widening taking for ever) tends to cause a backlog anyway. Saturday afternoon was the first time in a long, long time that I have driven north from HD and not come to a standstill at some point. Traffic was flowing really well and the only aggro was a young female (in a small bright yellow car) hogging the right lane at about 90kph, so that everyone had to over take on the left.
The usual problem on the motorway - it's called 'clattyism'.
lookoutas,

I can understand why anyone going north through the tunnel finishes up speeding. Can't stay at 80 in an auto without continually using the brakes! Sort've expected to start heading upwards completing a parabolic curve, but that never happened.
Jeez - clatty's & clitty's everywhere coming home today! One was even a cop doing 75 south of Te Kuiti. Lucky he pulled over just before a passing lane or I would've passed him on it. And anyone else who was too scared. The cruise control was already anticipating this happening, and was chucking out warnings!

Mate, I think you've either misread one of goats posts or your comprehension skills have completely abandoned you. I have gone back through the thread and read every post and still can't see what you're all lathered up about. Am I the only one ?
