Bring back the two strokes

Wish I'd collected a bunch of them. I remember seeing a trailer load of rz parts being biffed at the tip. Pipes, wheels and crank cases etc from more than one bike.

WAIL! . and that's not the sound from a couple of stinger tipped expansion chambers.

Less low speed torque than a wet noodle, but that's not the point, and for the two strokes I loved never was, low speed torque. pfft, that wasn't were it was at. The flattening of the performance curve was an attempt to tell a punk to pull up his socks and be a polite nice boy. Compromised.

The problem with 2 strokes as they don't rev. On my RZ350, it is all over by 9k, but the GPX250 will go quite happily til 14k. However it doesn't make much power until about 9k.

The problem with 2 strokes is their short life span compared to a 4 stroke.
I had a Suzuki and Kawasaki 2 stroke trailbike back in the early 70's and on both bikes the rotary valves disintegrated which destroyed the engines. So bought a non-rotary valve 2 stroke trailbike and had rings and small end bearings fail. Honda had just bought out the XL250 trailbike so I bought one, it was a revelation after all my 2 stroke bikes. When trailriding it went thru mud that had the 2 strokes bogged down and I did big miles on it with no mechanical issues.

Well. a 30hp 2 smoker Yamaha triple outboard has way more grunt from the get go than a 30 Yamaha 4 stroke triple.
even though they make exactly the same top speed.
just saying, thats all.

trogedon, Jun 24, 5:01am
My dad has a Seagull outboard and I had two two stroke trailbikes. we were both glad to get into four strokes. My Suzuki SV has more power than I could ask for down low.

richynuts, Jun 24, 5:17am
People are paying crazy money for 2 strokes at the moment. They may actually come unstuck and lose their investment if emission laws end up getting more strict. Not sure why some of you think two strokes have bottom end torque?

apollo11, Jun 24, 5:18am
650 or 1000?

bwg11, Jun 24, 5:19am
Absolutely. The mid-range two strokes totally out pull the heavier (for the same power) four strokes. Even better were the now defunct injected two strokes like the ETEC, the Yamaha HPDI and even the Mercury Optimax.

loud_37, Jun 24, 5:23am
that went over some peoples heads.

trogedon, Jun 24, 5:37am
650 but it's Vegan - so more power, better looking and it'll last a lot longer.

apollo11, Jun 24, 5:54am
I've got a TL1000R, raw steak red. Bit of a carnivorous dinosaur but still powerful enough to put a smile on my face.

absolute_detail, Jun 24, 6:05am
And lots of those hondas had problems chewing out cam journals

absolute_detail, Jun 24, 6:07am
If you want 2 stroke grunt try a 4.0l V8 Evinrude

trogedon, Jun 24, 6:08am
Very cool - both the bike and the writing!
I've got a Yamaha SR500 as well - the Carnivore of the pair - it looks bloody good but it's pretty toothless.

apollo11, Jun 24, 6:29am
A mate had an SRV250 in aquamarine. It was a really nice little bike.

trade4us2, Jun 24, 6:44am
My 350 two strokes had adequate power. But they put out clouds of smoke.

glang, Jun 24, 7:09am
True - but caused by poor maintenance, regular oil changes and the journals remained looking like new.

tygertung, Jun 24, 7:41am
Name a four stroke motorbike and we will do a little comparison to a comparable two stroke.

sr2, Jun 24, 7:46am
Have to say for those of us who had the had the chance to ride an H2 Mk4 in the late 70's / early 80's, for sheer brutality on two wheels there is nothing like a two stroke.

richynuts, Jun 24, 7:57am
Moto2 ( 765cc 3 cylinder 4 stroke) bikes are doing quicker lap times than the 500cc 4 cylinder 2 strokes of the 90's. I collect 400 four race reps of the 1990's they handle and stop far superior than a 1980's rz350. red line around 14,000 rpm and a much better bottom end. A 1990's rgv250 would be a better match to a zxr400, fzr400. In the UK they raced together in same the same class. 400's were more often than not winning.

The 1972 suzuki ts 250 with the pointless ignition went quite well. Front fork seals flogged out with dirt, grit. There were enough around that a few kiwi 'adjustments' were made to them.
TS 250 1972 2 stroke
https://youtu.be/EoQagpdGKh4 Probably the start of a generation of Kawasaki 4 stroke dirt/ trail bikes. Let down by a few design inadequacies. Kawasaki KL250 A1 4 stroke - the 'new bike' sounded better than this. https://youtu.be/LwQI32i-qTA
