Yes he has ruined it from the point of view of docile old classic, but it’s his toy so hands off!

kat--no he has done nothing wrong. It simply needs a few miles running in. being an older car thats generally a lot longer than for a newer car.

If you're gonna fit something modern in place of the original donk, then you may as well forget classic car ownership and go buy a Corolla. Fitting late model parts into a classic completely defeats the purpose in my opinion. They should be as close as possible to how they were when originally built.

Is the car the issue or is this just a symptom of the relationship?

Bigger valves New valve springs grind ports
These items are all things you do to make a car faster. NOT repairs for a broken down engine.

My husband did up an old car once, the entire thing, mechanics, structure, interior, everything. I loved it. Got one of my own later, not as much work needed, did some on that one. And how much does wife spend on stupid stuff like shoes, handbags and makeup. Heaps I bet. And the car ends up looking better.

Mine had a hot triumph vitesse 6 cyl in it (1600), went like the clappers, had a cop in honda accord mufti car back then, say he had been trying to catch me for half an hour, and was real keen to check under the bonnet. He was really nice about it, and only gave me a ticket for way less than actual speeds(said he had to give me one, as was radioed in, and half the city's cops were trying to catch me, - was a silly teenager back then).

The fitment of modern parts can make a classic car much more useable though, sure you are compromising originality but originality isnt that great when you have a nice looking nice driving car which has a crap component in it like a motor or trans which gave problems from new. think Triumph Stag for example. If you can replace a troublesome hard to find component with a much better modern one which is easy to replace if you ever needed to then it has to be a good thing. Its even nicer IMO if it's a later model component from the same brand of car. If you owned a Mk2 Escort, why dick about modding it's original 13 or 1600 motor in an oldschool fashion with carbs and cams etc with all its compromises when you can fit a factory injected 2L Mondeo Zetec and five speed in there and transform the thing into a terrific car and brilliant long distance cruiser for attending far away shows or club meets. You CAN make modern tech work well for you if you sort out the good bits from the unneccesary rubbish and some modern tech is indeed rubbish.

I dunno if it's got valve seat inserts, but if the valve seats are worn in too far, it's a easy option with better results. And cheap too. Good on him for keeping a Anglebox on the road.

but so does hotting it up the orginal engine etc. with a worked 1500 in it, mags, suspension etc it ceases to be a classic car. if your not going to do a classic car then it open to fitting anything modern. i think a lot of older cars that have good style, would go well with modern running gear. you certainly see that with with hotrods. plenty of them have got late model running gear.

Had to say to the courier guy. "If it looks like car parts and it's addressed to the workshop, don't drop it at the bloody house just because it's convenient!"

Went for a hot cam, while in there decided to do everything else that "needed" attention, classic, pulls like a schoolboy above 5k, like an anaemic geriatric below. Been there, got a similar reception for the folly, refused to drive it, became a bone of contention and a thorn in the side. Was fun while it lasted.

Hello my dear; rest assured you've done the absolute right thing coming to this austere forum for advice.
Our collective advice would be to keep buying the expensive lingerie but keep an eye out for a twin set of 40 DCOE Weber Carbs on a Linx manifold and all will be well.

I have seen this before with those anglias, first the head, then the manifold cracks and a set of extractors are the cheapest way to fix,, then the carb plays up and you then need a new inlet manifold because the new carb is a weber, The camshaft needs to be ground in these cars also, Keep the exhaust up to speed and a tractor muffler,, for economy.

Yeah, I guess like anything, it's horses for courses. For me, the appeal of a classic is the older technology. Moderns do my head in as it is, so the last thing I'd want is to modernise my classic, but if some can see benefits it's up to them I guess. Personal preference.
