I know of a guy who had a 2 litre MX-5 engine with BDA look-alike rocker cover in his classic Escort because he wanted to do club rallying and he wanted a reliable car with a modern, stock engine that he knew would start and run like a modern Japper every time.
When I was driving a 1971 Triumph PI on the road in the early 2000s, part of the appeal was driving something old that objectively felt good. But also part of the enjoyment was knowing that it had better performance and handling than most people assumed when they looked at it, and it could still surprise the occasional punter who didn't expect he would have to work to keep up. Is that petty? yes. Is it narcissistic? Probably. But that is part of the appeal of driving a classic driver's car, and if it had anything other than its own engine in it that would have been diluted a lot.

A lot of the small jap cars are pretty perky when just 1 or 2 ppl in it. Stick a decently loaded trailer on & the truth comes out. All sing & no torque.

interesting, old anglebox had a three bearing crank and basically was a piece of shit, to keep it ford and a better motor would be to put a Non crossflow 1500 block or a crossflow 1600, but at the end of the day, start making any horsepower and you will need all steel bottom end and the block will flex anyway, then there is the lotus twincam and the bda. Bang for buck, throw a late model injected Jap engine at it. but then you will need to replace everything except the door handles if you can get the rusty nut and bolts undone Allow a few hundred bucks for penetrating oil and time.
