You cant make offers through here, it depends on the bike, if i think it has potential i will pay for it, i dont have good money to throw after bad.

I think you have missed the point. To buy ANY of the bikes you are talking about $2k just aint even close to cutting it.unless its a total basket case--even then.

Whats my crappy 250 worth then?.

Well i missed three for 800 five years ago, in various states of repair. - .

Life is full of those I'm afraid. 5 years ago 800 was probably all they were worth. If you had bought any house in Auckland 5 years ago, you'd be pretty happy right now.

With out wishing to get political, it is obvious. If you print money (or use Jacinda's terminology, quantitative easing), it obvious as day follows night that rampant inflation will follow. Look at house prices for example. Then consider current interest investment rates, it is no wonder classic vehicle values are up. If you have storage space, classic vehicles must be the way to go. The prices of even 3 years ago are irrelevant. I'm shopping for FJ40's and early Honda bikes and missing the boat. I see roughies bringing ridiculous money.

I just sold a non running, incomplete Honda 50 step thru for way more than I thought it was worth. After offering it to a few people I know who didn't value it at 5/8ths of sweet fanny adams I put it up online and sold it in about 10 minutes.

All you can do is look further ahead and try to guess what might appreciate from more recent stuff. 80's to early 90's will start to climb soon, if it hasn't already. Stuff that you sent to the wreckers such as rg250's, Honda NC30's, Suzuki Katana's, heaps of possibilities. Just be prepared to hang onto it for a while. I remember being offered a couple of RD400's twenty years ago, but I didn't want them because they looked old. Probably worth some money now.

spot on . I know alot of guys with motorcycle collections. money in the bank is a waste of time now, putting money into property is the best option. Though having a collection of classic cars or bikes can be a good option but need to really be onto it to know the best bikes to collect now. I think the best way to collect them is to have diffrent makes and decades of bikes as they will only increase in value if the demand or popularity is there. Also no point in buying a 50k rc30 only to increase a few hundred a year. Better to buy something like few 250 2 strokes like nsr rgv tzr at 8k each. Buy the the best bike you can. Restoration costs can be bloody expensive.

Although the NC30 can still be bought for a few grand and looks similar to it's big brother. I think unusual bikes like the Bros 650, Katana 750, VF1000R and TL1000S might go up in value either due to quirky looks or reputation at the time. I used to lust after the Honda Tigerblade but I haven't seen one for sale for a very long time. Some of the 90's triumphs like the T595 might be worth a look too.

I think anything that was raced would become collectable. I think all the 400 four race reps from.the 90s will jump up in value especially once all the 2 strokes of the same era get out of price reach for the average Joe. The Nc30 and Nc35 are fetching really good money now. Cbr400rr Zxr400 Gsxr400 Fzr400rr are all hard to find now especially tidy low k ones. First of the cbr900rr, R1's, Sp1 and Sp2's will be the next generation of collectables. prices are going up now.

Yep I agree. The SP2's are already pricey. I wonder if any of Aprilia's stuff will be collectible? I've always liked the Falco and the Futura for sheer quirkiness.

Swapped a MVX250 for a car stereo in 1994, gave away a XZ400 in 1999…
Couldn't sell a very good 1966 Holden wagon with $200 worth of paint, spare engine & bits & body repair stuff for $600 in 2003. Houses that were less than $60,000 then, sell for 300k now.

I used to buy those for about $50 each and cut the back of the subframe off and use the rear pegs to convert those ex cop XJ750's into civvy dual seaters. The engines were scrap metal except for the stators which we rewound and the carbs were on an exchange basis with one of the carb shops --getting hucked out and jets opened up.

I know of a suzuki katana in a box that was dismantled in the early 90s, all there and needs fourth gear sorting out, recon i should grab it?.

Being a twostroke the mvx 250 might sell now, cant find one anywhere for the pistons and barrels i saved of one that blew the crank seals, i got it for nearly nothing in the 90s and fixed the third piston that had blown a hole in it, a mate found it dumped out in the country kicked it over and it ran on two cylinders so he threw it on the back of his ute.
MVX 250 is listed as 1 of the worst bikes ever made .

I have a nice low km Falco and a Mille both with improvements and running Gabro ecu chips .Have a 2008 RS125 for fun . Bought that thinking 2 strokes are going to be no more . . Bought a stolen and recovered Futura for bugger all , sold it earlier in the year to a work mate that wanted it more than me . Very comfortable mile muncher with paniers . Just been for a ride over the Karamea bluffs on a bmw f800st . Impressed with the way rode , didn't mind being held up behind traffic parked in 2nd . Have my Darmah thats always been a keeper for 30+ years . There are a few old 2 smokers on the coast that are still being used for daily transport .

I couldn't get crank bearings and seals in 1986 for one of those. I doubt that parts have magically gone back into production.

Fast & dangerous, only rode mine once. Collectable because NZ was the only country out of Japan to have them.and being a 3 cylinder vee 2 stroke would nail it into oddball terrortory.
The Yamaha XZ400 was odd too, 400cc in a 550cc engine, nice to ride but slowish & notible distinctive camchain noise, NZ engines didn't have serial # because the engine was fitted in NZ, probably to satisfy 'NZ built' import restrictions.

I was racing bikes in Australia in the early 80s and there were MVXs there then. I dont recall them as being that fast (or reliable). Mostly sponsored riders getting a 250 ride Not sure about XZ400s having motors fitted in NZ. Import restrictions on bikes were gone by then. They were a jap domestic model initially as most 400s were. These bikes were remanufactured down to 400 to obtain a favourable tax rate in Japan and were found to be a favourable price in NZ and Aus.

The Aprilia Rs250 is collectable now and has a good race history . Max Biaggi won 5 World titles on Aprilia (3 × 250 gp) (2 × WSBK). Not sure what the world title winning RSV4 is worth now.
