Hey Kaz check out the xz400 for sale on tm now. they were definitely sold new in NZ.

There's a XZ400 for sale in Invercargill ATM
They had a rusting problem in the tanks, where the tanks bottom was, was under the petcock & water would sit on both sides so a flat line of rust would appear at this level.
Also it was too damn easy to plug the wrong plug into the wrong socket somewhere under the seat, at that point something inside a black plastic box went Bang & smoke came out of it & it wouldn't go after that.
I think it just blew a copper track inside it & it could be repaired.

They used the right angle drive swingarm off them to make rotary engined hovercraft in Christchurch, used out near Lake Ellesmere I think.

But, what happened to the Triumphs & such from the 70's & 80's ? It was quite common to see their engines in Choppers then.

I had one as they were a cheap commuter when I was young.

Heavy, underpowered and famous for blowing alternators/regulators. From memory the alternator sat between cylinder heads and got cooked.

Because I was young, stupid and poor, I didn't get the alternator sorted for ages. I just took the battery out and put it on a charger and then ran the bike until the battery was flat. More than a couple of times I got it wrong and ended up having to walk the last bit home carrying my battery.

Was happy when I finally got rid of the bike and brought another 400 - the GSX400X impulse which I loved and did about 50,000k on. Finally replaced that with yet another 400. the Suzuki Bandit 400

I just bought a '93 gsxr400r only 19kms in excellent condition and getting really hard to find now.

apollo11, Feb 18, 6:16am

richynuts, Feb 18, 6:25am
Yes they are. as most of the 400's, I have quite a few now. Im missing a '93 cbr400rr and '93 zxr400r keen to find both of those models

apollo11, Feb 18, 6:47am
I had a couple of NC30's, an NC24 and an NC21. Great little engines.

richynuts, Feb 18, 7:07am

hotelcarpet, Feb 19, 10:32am
Buy a GN250 they are not made anymore which is rare for Suzuki cause they repeat the same model alot.

kazbanz, Feb 19, 10:17pm
Jap /180k restricted ? I think I've got a "cheater" box for one of those in my box o bits

rabbitt1000, Mar 24, 6:20am
all the wow bikes that folk think are out there have all been snapped up and wont be seen again in our life time.
unless one has serious coin and can import out of another country.
just sold a nice honda cbx. went through the roof

apollo11, Mar 24, 7:20am
I'd love to know how many bikes are sitting in garages, rego on hold. I suspect that it would be a fair percentage.

desmodave, Mar 24, 7:48pm
I would say your right . Considering the low population down here on the
West Coast , there are lots of classic bikes . Would seem most owners have more than a few in the shed .

apollo11, Mar 24, 8:43pm
Possibly a consequence of the high price of rego fees for bikes. I no longer register my bike for the full year anymore. The government probably saw rego income from motorcycles actually fall when they pushed the prices up.

desmodave, Mar 24, 9:49pm
You can only ride 1 bike at once anyway . Thats no doubt a line from somebodies wife , poor buggers . Its ok to hoard more than 1

gunna-1, Mar 25, 1:08am
tell me about it, i finally got my suzuki ts 250 going, its eather a late 60s or early 70s one, try finding a clutch cover or front engine mounts for one of those now, it has a slide and a needle in the carb out of a t 250 engine i couldent believe it fit the ts carb as one is a single and the other is a twin, but being a smaller needle it flooded like anything, still great to get it running, on one frame bolt, a rusty exhaust, and a crankcase full of oil from unsiezing it, the old neighbor kicked the bucket so i siezed the moment, the back yard never smelt so good and it looked like a giant bonfire.

gunna-1, Mar 25, 1:20am
Its one of these only a 250, can you imagine with almost no exhaust.

was the same deal with the SRX400 and 600. I had one of each id swap out, made for easy registration ;)

kazbanz, Mar 25, 8:41pm
Thinking about this a bit. A big part of the problem is that the cost of advertising on "here" is OTT so guys just aint bothering like they used to. Using other advertising methods.

gunna-1, Dec 21, 5:46am
In nz, looking for a suzuki gt 550 to ride on a learners, dereged or needs vin ok, the only ones seem to be in aussie or canada, remind self not to torture ones self with google images, ugh, i missed out on three of them five years ago and have seen none since, same for the widdow maker kawasaki, where did they go, can only find the odd 500 twostroke kawasaki tripple.

apollo11, Dec 21, 5:50am
Stuffed in people's garages, rego on hold or expired.

gunna-1, Dec 21, 5:58am
Same for the suzuki t250, plenty in aussie, i still have half of one i cant find parts for, just a pair of cylinder heads would probably have it running, but no luck so far.

desmodave, Dec 21, 6:16am
What would you pay for 1 . .

gunna-1, Dec 21, 6:23am
It depends, i want something localish, maby close to 2000$ for something complete and in reasonable shape, good engine ect, surface rust and paint no worries.

desmodave, Dec 21, 6:25am
Well i will leave to your TM name . Don't waste my time .
