my god you are full of shit, 1. a 1980's Ford Laser DOES NOT HANDLE WELL by any means once so ever, the only fast version was the TX3 turbo and knowing your taste in cars you wouldn't own one, when are you going to line up my Commodore mayes! i would love to humiliate you.

Why buy them then, if they are so bad! I have had Fords for a long time and the only one that ever gave me any grief was my AU XR8, which the dealership fixed immediately. The build quality now a days is just brilliant, and I know what I am looking for I worked in the industry for 12 years.

Why do base model (Australian built) Still insist on having manual window winders in the back! It costs soo much extra to make them electric like everyone else!

Sorry it clearly isn't. There is a pretty noticeable difference even between a current Mondeo and a Falcon. let alone something like a Passat.

I think you missed the point I was making. Inmy view (speaking only of the 3 I have owned in the last 5 years, all of which have been B series) they have had relatively minor build quality issues and road noise that is unacceptable. The point is that the time and cost of sorting those little issues is bugger all and the end result is a car that does a pretty fine job. So - buying the Falcon, spending a little time and a little cash on sorting those annoying little issues makes FAR more sense than buying something that is significantly better build quality but either twice the price of half the enjoyment of driving.

its just the lack of car knowledge and general idiots like mayes on this forum that annoy me.

exactly go for a trip and look at how many Falcons and Commodores are on the road the sales volume speaks for them selves, it will be a cold day in hell before i would drive a heap of thai built shit with a lawnmower engine.

Great idea - I'm taking a trip up the line this weekend. I'll keep a count of how many 1980s Lasers like my Missus' one I see on the road, and how many 1980s Holdens. Will report back here on Monday with the results.
richardmayes,
Sep 9, 10:32am
You know a lot of lawnmower motors are overhead cam these days, right!
Your big Holdens have some catching up to do if they want to get up to lawnmower motor standards.

Tells you pretty much all you need to know about the Ward's best engines list really! Hey Billy Bob, this V6 can set fire to your car without warning! Hot dang, That's awesome! This one's going straight on the list.

hahahahaha, nice one, oh and by the way people i am now ignoring mayes from now on because the guy is just a complete idiot.
scotty20001,
Sep 9, 2:51pm
oh no leaking valve cover gaskets! holy shit its the end of the bloody world, probably because mayes has no idea how to change a valve cover gasket, and with your idiotic comment to overhead cam motors, they are normally driven by cambelts (yuck) and secondly the fastest drag car in the world is a pushrod V8 pushrods are bloody good mayes thats why Holden have stuck with them for so long, all be it the new Alloytec is Quad Cam but yet a S/C 3.8 gives it a hiding and uses the same amount of fuel and it isn't built in a rat infested 3rd world shithole, get a grip on reality mayes because clearly you don't have one.
scotty20001,
Sep 9, 2:58pm
"the moment when mayes realizes a 3.8 S/C Commodore uses less fuel then his carbyed heap of shit ford laser"
scotty20001,
Sep 9, 2:59pm
wait for it mayes will probably try and tell you that his ford laser is superior to your F6 it really is incredible how much of an idiot this guy is.

Being FWD was mostly the reason, those vehicles always had a shocking reputation for problems with the auto transmissions, this dated from the mid 80's when the Magna first came on the market, it cost Mitsi Australia a fortune in warranty claims in the early days, and the fleet and taxi markets became very shy of them as a result, both the 4 and V6 engines were more prone to early failure too, at least in relation to the Holden/Ford sixes they were trying to compete against. While some could be blamed on poor servicing the bottom line was they were basically a bloated Jap market Galant with some mods for Australian manufacture/market that simply was not constructed to do the things that their RWD country cousings could, and Mitsubishi seemed to have little interest in solving the weaknesses, and could even be accused of misunderstanding the market they were trying to compete in.

Yep, I had a mid 80's Sigma SE 2.0 Auto, had all the bits (electronic speedo, speed sensitive windscreen wipers that tucked away when not in use, climate air etc). This was a NZ New car.Very comfy and cruisy. Also extremely slow, and the motor crapped itself at relatively low mileage, then the auto started to go shortly after. It wasn't an abused car either. Sold it and got a 1300cc Corolla man mobile, which was actually faster, certainly more reliable, but pretty basic inside.

The one before that was legendary. FWD killed those cars.

I'd agree that the RWD Sigma's were much better, although most Mitsi's I came across from 70's to mid 80's seemed to pick up a bit of a smoking habit.Plus Mitsubishi seemed quite good at extracting as little power from the engines as possible :-)I did also have an 89 Mirage Hatch, 1300 manual. That was a much better car, the only things that broke were expected wear an tear stuff.

But back to the OP topic, I'd agree that Falcons and Commodores don't seem to have the interior quality and general overall finish of some of the Japanese and Euro cars, but they do still seem to be good value for money.I'd be happier owning a high mileage Falcon or Commodore than a high mileage Euro.Depends on what you need though, my 2.5 A32 Cefiro Wagon does me fine and is cheaper than a Euro or Falcodore. As to style, Japs / Euros / British / Australian / Italians / the list goes on, have all made some cars that I like the look of.I think the new commodores with all of the christmas tree lights on them look rice however.

Where was the engine built! I thought the v6 was just based on the buick v6 and not the exact same, but built in australia. The 5L was an aussie designed and built engine,The 5.7 was the ony one I can think of.
