Sorting a race car

geedubu, Oct 29, 2:25am
The pre-65 racing morris minor (hot mga engine) I bought a few months ago is due back from body restoration work in a week. Before I take it out for my maiden voyage I need a good mechanic to go over it with me & sort the running gear/brakes suspension etc as I do not trust my amateur skills to check & fix all that may be needed to run safely at speed. Some sparkie expertise may also be useful as I am thinking of installing/wiring an alternator (none currently fitted).Would rather do this in my garage, but will pay fair rates.Any recommendations!

I use By'Gone Autos (Mal Clark) at Beachaven for all my mechanical work. The other option in the same Beachhaven compound is Scott (who now owns) Fraser Cars.
Mike Barlow at Parity Place (Glenfield) for any electrical stuff that is beyond me such as the electrical internals of starter motors or alternators. (I wire up my own cars from scratch.)
Further north, Motorsport Fabrications (Titan Place, Silverdale) Paul Madeley is highly recommended. He can also do corner weighting (and is a brilliant fabricator) which I would suggest is essential for a race car of any sort. For finally setting up the wheel alignment, Wairau Alignment (Wairau Road).
Look forward to seeing it and best of luck.We need more cars like that out on the track.

by-gone autos at beachaven, owner is mal, he has forgotten more than others know about classic cars, and set ups, good luck you will enjoy the ride,

Thanks for that, I am across the bridge (Herne Bay).My main motives apart from safety obviously are a bit of look and learn, which is one of the reasons I'd like to have it done at home.bodywork has been a (worthwhile) mission, it sat outside for 5 years before I bought it but survived quite well, I thought it was far too nice to see it let go.

what ever happened to the MORRIARRI !do you know what i'm talking about n !

geedubu, Oct 29, 4:25am
The Morrari!I sure do remember that, saw it racing when I was a boy.The chassis, which was from a Ferrari Super Squalo, was sold back to the UK & has now been rebuilt in its original form.Would cost you 2 - 4 million if you want it back.Don't know what happened to the engine (a corvette fuelie) or the body, a poor wee morrie. But I have heard somebody is building up a replica which I guess you could do from welding up a super squalo tubular chassis equivalent; fabricating suspension equivalents & installing a corvette donk. The morris body would be the least of your problems!

great replyta , ithought with < 65racing the car had to use the original eng blk

socram, Oct 29, 5:05am
If there is a problem in Pre 65, you'll be more than welcome in the AES/Tradezone Group, with a few minor(!) adjustments. In fact, I think it would be a far better class for your car anyway - but I am biased.

geedubu, Oct 29, 5:07am
I hope I'm right but I believe regs areengine from same maker; same era; same number of cylinders. Block is ex MG Magnette. In any case, my old morrie previously raced in pre-65 & was owned some time back & rebuilt by the guy who is responsible for complying them for the series. So I have faith!

HEY LADA DUDE>>>

i havent forgotten about the piston.just havent had a chance to get by your place.probably be past on tuesday

geedubu, Oct 29, 5:40am
Nothing wrong with the AE series, I will trail the back of the pack whatever class it goes in.Yrs as spectator, some really amazing experiences as passenger. no experience as driver!

socram, Oct 29, 6:54am
Aha!But that is the whole point of the AES Series. All points races are handicaps, so that means you always get your full quota of race laps as the faster guys run in Arrow Wheels group.Personally, I hate being at the back of the grid in a scratch race and being lapped after a few laps, when the faster guys are 20 seconds a lap quicker, or, having sucha lonely race that I may as well just do track days.
Suggest that you doa couple of track days first, just to establish your lap times and see exactly where you fit.

TA muchlyFORD CRZYi was thinking of looking in the obituary section of the nz herald !hey, what ever suits you

the-lada-dude, Oct 29, 6:25pm
GEEDUBUdo you have to use the original cyl head ! (mods to head allowed )would you be allowed to use the TWIN CAM head ! although price and availability could be a problem.

the-lada-dude, Oct 29, 6:27pm
SOCRAMcan you post a link to this AES series sounds interesting

geedubu, Oct 29, 7:34pm
Don't think the twincam head would be allowed.but I wouldn't & couldn't! Apart from complexity it would be about as hard on the wallet as getting back a Super Squalo chassis.

geedubu, Oct 29, 7:37pm
dude, there's a consul 315 classic with rover v8 (and a spare 300hp rover engine) on trademe just waiting for you to hit buynow & carve up the field in the AES series.

http://www.tops.co.nz/car/erc/erc_index.htm

Check out the entrants pages for both groups.Driver registration form being rebuilt because the web hosters dropped the old Front Page Server Extensions and now the form submit page has to be in PHP.

ERC = European Racing Classics.Covers AES & Arrows.Rules were rewritten some years ago to allow in a maximum of 5 "Retro Classics".Deemed to be pre 1977 Euros with transplanted pre 1977 Euro engines - but they must be fully road legal.

The 315 Classic (above) if road legal would qualify under that rule - subject to no more than 15% of the current drivers objecting to it.The only car that has actually made it to the grid so far is Gordon Burr's V8 Escort. We also now have the ex Trevor Crowe V8 Skoda registered, but the engine went pop.The rules were initially rewritten to include Jo Hills Herald Coupe V8 and no cars submitted so far have been refused!

Although a road-going series, that does mean Dot rated road legal tyres but we don't insist on the other non Retro cars being road legal, as that means the farce of authority cards for belts and other red tape, plus ACC, rego etc., for a car that might well be trailered anyway.

Minor with MGA engine would probably be OK under normal rules and not deemed a Retro Classic, so need not be road registered.Several A & B series engined cars have appeared with period after market crossflow heads, which are also legal.

the-lada-dude, Oct 29, 10:03pm
yeah right GEEDUBU !only keen on the rover transplant if it comes with all the bits jack ( brabham ) made for it !do you know what i'm banging on about !also i presume these mga heads are 5 port ! if so david vizard did a lot oftesting on these c/h's also special c/shafts called scatter cams, you may already know about this !
ta SOCRAM. yes the ERC rules still eliminateye ol lada as it' an '88

elect70, Oct 29, 11:03pm
There was a MM drag car too ,worked 350 SBClethal thingbloody near killed him .

socram, Oct 29, 11:41pm
I used to sprint in the UK when one of my favourite cars that turned up for a couple of seasons at Silverstone was a MM with a supercharged 3.8 Jaguar engine.T'was a real handful, so for year 2, he removed the supercharger!

Lada dude, send me a pic as if the Lada is basically a Fiat from an earlier age, we can probably stretch the rules. At least it isn't another Escort.

the-lada-dude, Oct 30, 1:50am
hey iv'e still got a way to go yet SOCRAMbut you know what they look like. mines the 1600 5 speed with the nice grill and bonnet . i think they were still making or selling them in 2004called a RIVA or similar in uk. i'd love to import a real tidy one !

the-lada-dude, Jan 17, 2:14am
