Quite a few years back I backed into someone and thought "oh, it's just a shitter, be $200, sweet". The driver got back to me with the lowest quote as $680 (up to $1000) and that sealed it for me. Having full insurance for a year under that price is enough to keep me getting it, for peace of mind.

You were paying $1400 yearly for a HF turbo! Three years premiums and that is more than the car is worth.

BTW my current MR2 turbo is $370 year and I'm seven years your junior.

bellky, Oct 23, 11:53am
exact same thing happened to me a few years ago (even same amounts). i still don't have insurance on my own cars as i hardly drive them. and i'm MILES ahead on premiums after 23 odd years.

>>>>>

Still blimin cheap for repairing either end of a new-ish merc/ Jag/ hsv/ Xr6 etc etc

mrfxit, Oct 23, 12:18pm
The problem has never really been about your own car being written off, it's more about 'the other vehicle"

neville48, Oct 23, 12:24pm
Not so!Had a friend under-insured a boat because of what it owed him;ie: 4k for an 8k boat. It was destroyed in a motoring accident and the insurance co questioned him about under-insurance and basically said to him he was accepting half the liability so they paid him out 2k.damn.

mrfxit, Oct 23, 12:25pm
I would have insisted on Pre accident valuation qoutes to be included,
Tho
Still far better then nothing from no insurance

crzyhrse, Oct 23, 12:32pm
I've never had one broken or cracked in 25 years of motoring. Granted the first 13 I didn't even own a car but still - even in the years I was doing 35 000km p.a. all I ever had was a chip (still have it actually LOL).

pollymay, Oct 23, 2:03pm
3rd party is a must have really. I've had hubs and whole wheels part ways with the car while driving, I have been in the middle of town and my tyre musta run over something and a rear blewout in the altezza and landed up sliding sideways on full lock holding it there, no one was in the path of my rear end though.

Shit happens that even the best have no control over.

bellky, Oct 23, 2:14pm
that stuff doesn't happen to me thank gosh!

moosie_21, Oct 23, 2:31pm
That's the entire point, you're NOT God, you DON'T know what's going to happen, you NEVER mean to be in an accident, but it happens, so therefore you insure yourself!

electro2000, Oct 23, 6:23pm
Accident >An accident or mishap is an unforseen and unplanned event or circumstance, often with lack of intention or necessity. It implies a generally negative outcome which may have been avoided or prevented had circumstances leading up to the accident been recognized, and acted upon, prior to its occurrence.

But I'm a good driver27 years has some how made me foreseeevents before they unfold so i can avoid that event and therefore do not need insurance
It must be just a waste of money,

I think its crazy that people dont have insurance! Being a good driver has nothing to do with it, shit happens, someone may hit you. Write off your new car, and they might have the attitude as someone above 'ill pay it back at $10 a week. Good luck buying yourself a replacement at 10 a week.
Or what if you had a bad accident that involved a lot of damage to someone elses propertly! How shit would you feel that they were waaaay out of pocket because of you! Hitting even a fence is not cheap to repair.
I have full insurance cover, 400 odd a year, you just never know whats around the corner.

trader1292, Oct 23, 9:35pm
If you dont have at least third party you are risking being in debt for the rest of you life. For the couple of hundred dollars a year max its not worth the gamble.

johnf_456, Oct 23, 9:37pm
Depending on the car it can be more than a few hundred especially for a less experienced under 25, but yes by all means get insurance. Third party at the minimum.

trader1292, Oct 23, 9:42pm
Na its never more than a few hundred. It was only a few hundred for me to 3rd party a modified 2.7l bmw earlier this year and I'm 18, have had a couple of tickets and crashed a car last year.

bevharris1938, Oct 23, 9:48pm
If you do have third party or full insurance you will be in debt for the rest of your life anyways , so whats the diff !

johnf_456, Oct 23, 9:52pm
Oh it certainly is I know a few people who are in you age bracket and many are paying over 500 bucks plus. Of course it varys on the person and the car but insurance has gone up especially now days with the chch quake you'd be surprised. Even doing some basic quotes online just now quickly shows its more than a few hundred for third party. By all means get insurance but in recent times its not cheap as what it use to be.

mrfxit, Oct 24, 6:43am
Being "a good driver" DOES have a lot to do with it = dramatically lowers the chances of an accident.
It's the personal definitions of "a good driver" thats the problem.

mrfxit, Oct 24, 6:56am
Hmmmm bog stock average cheap tidy car from a car sales yard @ $15000 calculated by $10 per week x 52 weeks per year > >>> >> ( * * * *) PLUS court fines for the accident (why else would you be paying for the repairs/car value unless you are guilty of the accident)
just for the heck of a figure, add $2000

Who wants to work out what that equals =

vjregal770, Oct 24, 8:46am
A "good" driver by definition is also a RESPONSIBLE driver.

And all responsible drivers have insurance.

bellky, Oct 24, 8:48am
what sort of insurance! a fat bank balance is cheaper to maintain than paying premiums to leaches mr responsible

bellky, Oct 24, 8:51am
sanctimonious git.

vjregal770, Oct 24, 8:55am
It's just common sense. You can be the most careful driver on the planet. You're still at the mercy of the biggest dickhead on the road driving drunk in his unwarranted, unregistered, unroadworthy - oh, and UNINSURED - vehicle.
