reccomendations please for mechanic to sort out my auto gearbox on a mercedes please, Dont think its a major job but sorta want to avoid mercedes specialists as dont want to be charged the earth in new plymouth

The trouble that you could run into, speaking from past experience, is finding someone who understands the MB auto box. They are different from jap boxs that most auto techs would be used to. You may end up paying about the same because you will effectively paying for the training of the non MB tech. When I was in the trade I used to have a retired MB tech come in to sort the odd merc that had a dodgy box. Every time the first thing he did was replace the gearbox filter and then tune the engine. 9 times out of 10 the gearbox came right, because now the correctly running engine was sending the correct signals to the gearbox. His comment was most garages were fiddling with the box first and stuffing up the whole system which then took ages to sort and generally incorrectly.

in your opinion then, if a gearbox changes between first and second fine but wont go past second would it be better to maybe go to a euro specialist then!

As much as I am a cheapskate myself, that would be my recommendation. If you know anyone in the local Mercedes-Benz car club, they may be able to point you in the direction of a friendly garage.

yeah sure Make: MERCEDES-BENZ Model: 220E Year: 1993 it drives fine apart from the gears wont change past 2nd gear. between first and second is fine
