Hey Kaz, well I already did add the 2010 bit at the end when I took over & registered as a coy - but I dunno, I just dont want to work forever under someone elses name! Its not my style really to want something clever or to use my own name It will be a mission to change it all over - it was bad enough when i took over lol - will do it tho, has to be within 6 months - sick of getting to work & seeing that name lol

I like that. You could have it large on a sign then in small print beneath have the existing name.A bit like everyone knows what "Macca's" is you will become known as The Workshop.

Zeph I'm hearing you mate >believe me I know EXACTLY what you mean (3 years as XXXXX car centre) so I went through the process myself but decided that it would beharmfull to my company to change the name. If you are going to change names I'd suggest names that reflect honesty and dependability but never actually use those words. The Workshop or XYZ road mechanical comes to mind. I tend to agree that useing your own name isn't a good idea but only because you may long term be intending to create something to sell. I guess you aren't thinking of having multiple branches. If you were then a name that reflects this is always good

Still waiting for my bottle James :) Kaz, I agree totally, but like you say, when it comes to selling up at whatever stage the longevity of a company name and reputation has to be considered. It is also an issue with the actual place James in situated in, known for the that very garage name but then the ex owner will always have one over on him given the lease on the building etc. Clean getaway springs to mind and not held to ransom each time the lease comes up. Good will, buying a company is a huge Grey area especially with small set-ups like James has (no offense) but I would suggest if staying in that position then change the name soon as poss, build on it before any move like a year or two than you have your own asset take take with you and people/customers know you not the old guy.

Yea I hear you unideck. I don't know the politics of the matter which may indeed be a factor--ie the lease etc. Reputation is indeed an important point but zeph has been I would guess improving the reputation of the company over the past year. In my opinion reputation has about a 4 year lifespan. One thought with a namechange would be to settle on a name and have a 12 month phase in period where both names are displayed
