Quick question on headunits - the ones with front USB input, do they simply take a flash drive as the source for music, or is that an input for an MP3 player, or might it vary depending on the product! For example auction349165340.
Please and thank you

All the ones I have used can be used for both, including using many MP3 capable phones as a music source. The cheap piece of crap in my car accepts just about anything.

just make sure your flash drive doesn't exceed the storage that the headunit can read. I.E mine takes up to 64GB so you cant go plugging in a usb powered 1Tb hardrive , has to be a usb stick

Could be a volume size limit, but it could also be a file system one - a head unit is highly unlikely to be able to read NTFS volumes

yeah usually just FAT

The pioneer in mine will apparently read up to a 250gb drive.

Always easier just to plug your ipod into the AUX input and control music from ipod.

Assuming you have an iPod.
I have a couple flash drives, they're only 2-4Gb so will just format as fat32 and should be fine.
