Possible blown fuse!

I have 2 spare head units to try that was just what I was thinking. It's soldered in properly so will be a mission to test another head unit, any simple tips. Cheers

Yes, run a wire from the earth or exterior of the unit directly to a steel part of the vehicle.
To test another unit, just push a pin through the power cable and wrap an exposed bit of wire around that. Test, then use as power for the second head unit. Good luck.

Ok in my prying :( The clock now has stopped working. I did have constant and ACC power to the head unit. Now there is now constant (yellow wire) with ignition off, but there is ACC (red) with the ignition on, still can't find a blown fuse but seems dodgy. Will try to test that second head unit now thanks 40wav

*Isolated earth test - dedicated earth from head unit to the chassis. Done and no change.

*2nd head unit test - test another head unit using pin through ACC power wire. Done and no change.

**It appears I now have no constant 12V power, only ACC power, and no clock now either. Gosh this is frustrating me!

Yeah nothings worked

Eventually you'll probably have to remove the head unit and power it off a battery to test it. You need both permanent 12 volts (radio/memory) and ACC (power on) as well as an earth to get the radio operational.

andrea_w, Dec 11, 5:34am
Are you absolutely sure you had both Permanent and Accessory powers initially! If so, check for any speakers wires that are touching earth. Especially if you had the door card off and were playing with wiring in that general area (for the central locking .!)
Some stereos won't turn on if a speaker wire is shorting - it protects the internal amplifier.

A multimeter may be a better bet to test fuses. they almost always blow cleanly, but I have seen some that are partially blown. They test "OK" with a test light (at a glance) as they let some current through, but not enough to power up a stereo.

This type of thing is so hard to diagnose over the internet. I bet that road trip is even more tempting now haha

I think you need to take it to a sparky as this is painful to read. If power to headunit, full time and acc, and head unit has an earth and stereo still not working. It is the stereo. 5min job for a sparky

mortluby, Dec 11, 8:18am
I have also had fuses that test AOK with a meter but when load is put on disconnect, damn painful to find as you need to be measuring both sides of the fuse while the unit is operational.

hi there ive been trying to find a new earth clamp thing that goes onto a screw because my curent one is wrong it goes around a screw but its not a full circle do you know where i could find them my wire kit only came with a copuple and ive lost/used/broken them and my sub wasnt working to well the other day had to recut and pry apart the clamp thing on the black earth wire work now though but having the proper thing that you can attach to a screw/bolt securaly would be great

inkapuka, Dec 11, 8:59am
Sory that make stuff all sence lol XD

andrea_w, Dec 11, 10:00am
lol it kinda makes sense. it sounds like you're after a ring terminal for the earth on your amp .!
Places like Jaycar stock ring terminals for all different gauge wire. Only costs a few bucks for a pair of ring terminals!
Or if it's for a thin wire, any car audio shop will probably be able to give you a ring terminal. or somewhere like Repco will stock small packs of them!

Now I'm not a Sparkie - but if I cut a wire and other unintentional things stopped working, I would reconnect it and see what happens.

I'm closer than Andrea. if you're ever up my way, I'll have a look for you.
