95 Octane in a 91 Octane powered car.

Hey Peeps,

Just a quick question,

Would it be ok to put 95 Octane in a 91 Octane car!

The car is a 1992 Corolla 1.6 4A-F Carby.

Would I get better mileage out of 95 than 91, on long trips!

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks.

P.S, Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

Absolutely fine to put high octane in a low octance car just don't go the other way around with low octane in a high octane car.

You won't get a massive improvement being a carby car which we assume is tuned for 91. However from personal experience with carb cars you may still find you get enough extra economy to cover the difference in fuel and little extra. Plus you may find it goes better on hills etc.

If you were happy to do this on an ongoing basis you could improve the situation by advancing the ignition timing 3 degrees or so which will allow the engine to better capitalize on the better fuel.

You will never be able to get the full benefit though as its not easy to change the compression ratio.

That said, if you are interested do some testing and see what results you get.

my 4AF runs happily on either grade. Can't say I've noticed any fuel economy difference, but my driving in that car is all short start stop stuff anyway.
