going to register it in QLD! if so have you had a look into what's required to do so! Have you owned it for 12+ months in NZ!

Unless it is something very special, it is much easier and cheaper to sell it, and buy another when you get over there.

Rena Shipping Co. they can be a bit slow though!

You need to be doing very careful research about what is and isn't allowed in before even thinking about contacting shipping companies, there is a load of fishhooks in their rules, especially if what you are taking over is less than 15 years old, including minimum ownership periods.Look at both the Qld Transport and the Dept of Transport in Canberra websites before doing anything else.

I took a car over to Adelaide a while back. Generally speaking you need to bring the car back. NZ automobile assoc have lots of info too. Via their international division in Auckland. Unless you plan to bring the car back to NZ I would not reccommend

you need to get an import licence as well to get approval to bring the car into Australia before you even arrange to export it. no licence no car aloud into the country

It really depends on the car as to whether its worth sending over.

For example - Cars in Australia, especially older Jap sports cars cost a PREMIUM in most of the states, and they're in SHIT condition.

If _IF_ (.) you could get a sub 130k's on the dial and mint MR2 SC or SW20 Turbo over to NSW you could probably get an easy 15 grand for it - the same sort of car you'd buy here for 5 grand.

If you've got a Falcon, or a Commodore, don't waste your time etc.

Euro's are about the same - Alfa's, Volvo's, old 3 series BMW's etc go for lower figures, exotics you could either make an absolute killing (Porsche 930 911 down the road from me in Nrth Syd asking over $150k - you'd buy it here for 50) but a Ferrari 360 is going to see you out of pocket (after exchange and not factoring in costs) about 15-25 grand depending on version.

Mostly though its impossible for the average layperson to get through all the beuracratic horse shit and red tape in Australia.

yes the used car market here in Australia certainly is messed up. mid 90s Corollas often sell for $5000 yet an early 2000s Falcodore or Magna could be had for the same money, or even less. Cost of car ownership is far more expensive too. you think NZ$300 per year for registration is bad! Try AU$360/NZ$450 for just 6 months for a 4cyl vehicle (in QLD), it gets even more expensive if you have a 6 or 8 cyl vehicle. Oh, you can't buy registration less than 6 months worth too. On the upside 91 octane hovers around AU$1.40/L on average, and diesel is perhaps 10c more/L at most with no RUC's having to be paid. I'm really surprised not many diesel passenger cars are here. they just don't seem popular at all.

QLD would be the easiest state to bring a car into, apparently if you've owned it for 12 months or more in hour home country it isn't subjected to the ADR but you would still have to comply it and first register it, which isn't as expensive as it sounds. Have been thinking of bringing my VR-4 over if I do choose to settle in Australia, purely because I have not found any nice examples for sale in Australia.
