Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the japanese cd in the inbiut gps with a nz one!

Absolutely not, I lived in Japan, have read many threads on this topic on TME, investigated it extensively in 2 languages, have friends with extensive knowledge of IT & electronics in both countries - definitely can't be done, forget about it, unfortunately.Just buya cheap local gps (I have) they work fine, the suction cups fit nicely on to the redundant screen!.

I've posted this a number of times, took out original screen from Subaru and installed one I bought from here on trademe with igo GPS installed, works a treat!

I dont get why though when the screen pops down it just has a Cd in it.Surely some where you can get a NZ one!

Because someone would have to reverse engineer the unit to figure out how the software works and then design something to work on it.That isn't trivial and given the sheer number of different types available its never going to happen.

As above you could replace the entire unit (if it doesn't have other controls like air conditioning you need to keep of course)

THE ANSWER IS NO.

The motor trade terminology is CONTROL.
That's why you/we can't do it cheaply.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

IS THAT SIMPLE ENOUGH ANSWER.!
THE SOFTWARE AND SATELLITE LOCATION HARDWARE S DIFFERENT!

But they build them wrong for here. So that means they could build them right if they wanted to.
It's just the cost that kills it.

As I've said in other threads, buy NZ new.End of problem. Given the regularity of this question are car dealers telling people that its just a case of throwing a CD in to fix it!JDM vehicles are built IN Japan, FOR Japan, TO BE USED in Japan, and CRUSHED in Japan. They have always done things their own way and don't care about anyone elses standards, as do a lot of other places in Asia. But I suppose we can be grateful that the buggers use metric fasteners on their product at least. Many of them still don't even bother to fit proper international standard 17 digit VIN numbers to local cars. Its only with their export product thats intended for export that they start to toe the line. The days of importing technically complex things like cars that have major parts of them simply not intended to work here are ending.Wny car buyers and importers cannot grasp this and are willing to purchase and have significant parts like heating and A/C systems, radios and GPS units that aren't changeable and useable I don't know.

What is the difference between having a non-functional GPS unit and not having one at all (like an NZ new car).

The only thing that has any merit is radio frequencies but believe it or not not everyone cares about radio (I'd personally rather not listen to advertisements when driving)

Of course, GPS is hardly an essential feature, but the point is that people are going ahead and buying vehicles with the understanding that these features can be made to work, and they can't be, and the presence of some of these gadgets can even be influencing their decision. The dealers are clearly not bringing their lack of functionality to their attention.

I learned that truth a few years ago when I bought a Jap import. That's why I have just bought a nz new Honda- but 3 months after I bought it (2006) the bldy cd player has bombed out! And, because the cd player is incorporated in the dash will cost an arm and a leg to fix (quoted $350)I can't dont want to spend that amount so have got a thingy to play my ipod thru the radio and it works a treat. But it just annoys me that the cd doesn't work. Another thing learned, buy a nz new car also one that doesn't have the radio/cd player in the dash.If that is possible.

$350 isnt that expensive to get the cd player fixed at all.
