Roughed up clean bare metal, no worries. There are other ways and reasons but people have been doing that way for decades with no issue.

Bare metal is OK as long as its keyed properly AND you are using a filler that doesn't absorb moisture, Newtech or another similar fibre reinforced one is what you should use, you can always use a conventional filler for finishing.

Best way of all is to use POR15 or Eastwoods Rust encapsulator or Rust Bullet over your bare metal then bog. Do that properly and your repair will last a long long time even if its in a rust prone area.

You can get an etch primer in a spray can these days, not too expensive either. Have seen two E-Type Jags lately in different panelshops haveing to be totally bare metal restored because the bog was either lifting or rusting was happening underneath, simply beacause at that time no one thought of etch priming the metal before they filled. Both of these cars were done about 10 - 15 years ago. I strongly recommend an epoxy etch prime on the bare metal. Unless of course it is a job where if it last 5 years its ok.

And theres your biggest problem right there, painting it one day. that is the cause of most rust under bog/primer than other reasons. Seal the repair, even you just brush some old enamal on it in the mean time.
